Breaking Down the Kyrie Irving Trade to the Dallas Mavericks

By Jeff Stinger

The first domino to fall in the 2023 NBA trade deadline is a big one, to say the least, as the Brooklyn Nets have agreed to trade eight-time All-Star Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks. How does this massive deal impact the Mavs, the Nets, and the entire season’s picture in general?

Nitrobetting is ready to dish out key assists and lob passes with betting tips and news coverage throughout the 2022-23 NBA season. This time, let’s break down the recent Kyrie Irving trade to the Dallas Mavericks and what that means for both the Mavericks and the Brooklyn Nets.

Kyrie Irving Traded to the Mavericks

Built for Cuban’s Links

When healthy, Kyrie Irving is one of the best NBA players today. However, injuries and off-court controversies have plagued the former NBA champion of late. The change in scenery is a welcome one for Irving, as a more progressive-thinking owner like Mark Cuban is a much better partnership for him business-wise. No longer playing in Brooklyn’s media-coverage-heavy market should also give Kyrie a longer leash to feel more at home in Dallas whilst still expressing his oftentimes polarizing takes outside of basketball.

The Help That Luka Needed

In terms of on-court production alone, the Mavs’ acquisition of Irving is nothing but a positive move. The 30-year-old veteran gives them a fantastic backcourt partner to pair up with their electric guard Luka Doncic. Irving’s vision and scoring prowess will only open up even more scoring opportunities for Doncic without Luka having to outwork himself in isolation situations anymore. Dallas’ ball rotation is also expected to see a significant improvement, with Irving and Doncic combining for an average of 13.5 assists per game this season.

What’s Next for the Nets?

Months after trading away James Harden to the Sixers, the Nets are seeing yet another Big three implode in front of their eyes. There have been recent rumors of Kevin Durant being the last piece to fall from their failed project at bringing Brooklyn back to relevancy, but those rumors were shut down by the team’s front office. Regardless of whether or not Durant is also shipped before the trade deadline, heads will soon be called for in the Nets’ management for them to squander all three of their biggest talents in less than half a decade.
