L.A. Chargers 2023 Straight-Up Overview

The Chargers’ offense will either break out this season or it will take a backward step. There are reasons to believe a break-out is what happens.

For starters, Rashawn Slater should be one-hundred percent. Slater, one of the top left tackles in the NFL, suffered an injury last season. If Slater returns one-hundred percent healthy and starts dominating like he did his rookie season, forget it, quarterback Justin Herbert will light up opposing defenses.

Herbert’s stats last season were fantastic, 4,739 yards and 25 TD passes, but Keenan Allen and Mike Williams were hurt for most of the season. If the WR duo can stay healthy, Herbert’s numbers will explode.

Also, even though he asked to be traded, top pass-catching running back Austin Ekeler will once again carry the pigskin for the Bolts. Ekeler should also have an excellent season.

When it comes to the defense, on paper at least, the Chargers will boast one of the league’s best. Derwin James, Joey Bosa, and Kahlil Mack are three of the best players at their respective positions.

The defense for sure should be solid. The key, like for most teams, is injuries. The Chargers for some reason always suffer injuries to important players. In 2022, it was to the entire receiving corps. This season, everyone must stay healthy for the Bolts to have any shot of competing for the AFC West title.

Kansas City will be one of the top teams in the league, and the Raiders, if Jimmy Garoppolo stays healthy, will be a good football team. Denver will be much improved now that Sean Payton is the head coach, which brings us to LAC’s Achilles Heel.

For sure, the offense and defense will rock. However, head coach Brandon Staley has shown he may not be the person to lead the Bolts.

Payton and KC’s Andy Reid will outcoach Staley in at least 1-of-2 head-to-head matchups in 2023. Also, the out of division schedule is no cakewalk. But with that being written, this team is too good to lose more than 7 games. The Bolts go 10-7 on the season.

L.A. Chargers 2023 SU Record Prediction: 10-7

L.A. Chargers 2023 Against the Spread Overview

Our straight-up prediction for the Chargers is the same as how the Bolts finished in 2022, 10-7. But although the Chargers went 10-7 straight up last season, they went 11-5-1 against the spread.

We shouldn’t expect the same ATS record in 2023. Oddsmakers rarely blow spread lines on the same team in two straight seasons. LAC goes 8-9 ATS.

L.A. Chargers ATS Record Prediction: 8-9

L.A. Chargers 2023 Over/Under Overview

Los Angeles should score more points in 2023 than they did in 2022. The key will be injuries and Staley’s play-calling.

We should assume oddsmakers will be dialed in when it comes to totals. Expect a 9-8 or 8-9 over to under record.

L.A. Chargers 2023 Over/Under Record Prediction: 9-8
