Los Angeles Chargers 2024 NFL Season Win/Loss Total
Will the Los Angeles Chargers be any good this NFL season? Remains to be seen off a hugely disappointing 5-12 campaign last year, but they definitely will be more interesting simply because of new head coach Jim Harbaugh. We break down the 2024 Chargers.

Los Angeles has the 27th-toughest schedule in the NFL this season, as its opponents have a combined winning percentage of .478. The Bolts are 3-point home favorites for Week 1 against the Raiders, rather fittingly. LA did beat the visiting Silver & Black in Week 4 last year, 24-17, behind a franchise-record six sacks from Mack. Herbert accounted for three touchdowns in the first half.
2023 Was Not a Good Year
One of the most embarrassing performances by any NFL team in years was when the Chargers were destroyed 63-21 at Las Vegas on Thursday night in Week 15 last season. The Raiders, who were led by a then interim coach in Antonio Pierce, hadn’t scored a touchdown since Week 12, were playing without All-Pro running back Josh Jacobs and started a rookie quarterback in Aidan O’Connell yet scored a franchise record in points.
That essentially left ownership with no choice but to make big changes. The next day, both Coach Brandon Staley and GM Tom Telesco were out. Staley was only the second Chargers coach to be fired mid-season since 1970, joining Kevin Gilbride, who was fired in 1998.
NFL teams had been trying for years to get Jim Harbaugh to leave as head coach of his alma mater Michigan, and he was finally ready to do it after leading the Wolverines to last season’s national title. Harbaugh went 44-19-1 in four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014. Over the course of those four seasons, Harbaugh coached 17 players to a combined 30 Pro Bowl selections — the second-most Pro Bowlers in the NFL in that time. Eight of those players were also recognized as first-team All-Pro selections from The Associated Press, including linebackers Patrick Willis (twice) and NaVorro Bowman (three times).
Two years ago, Harbaugh had an interview with the Vikings, lost out on the position to Kevin O’Connell and said “this is the last time” he would pursue an NFL position. Last year, he had a video meeting with the Broncos before taking his name out of the running for Denver’s job.
Why chose the Chargers? Because they have a young franchise quarterback in place in Herbert even if he comes off a moderately disappointing, injury-plagued season. There’s also the fact that Harbaugh played for the franchise back in the day and said: “When I played for the Chargers, the Spanos family could not have been more gracious or more welcoming. Being back here feels like home, and it’s great to see that those things haven’t changed.” Harbaugh also broke into the head coaching ranks at the University of San Diego, leading the Toreros to a 29-6 record in three years.
Will the Roster Be Solid This Season?
The Chargers were pretty quiet in free agency, signing veteran players such as linebacker Denzel Perryman, running back Gus Edwards, center Bradley Bozeman and tight end Hayden Hurst. They released high-priced receiver Mike Williams and traded future Hall of Famer receiver Keenan Allen to Chicago for a 2024 fourth-round pick. Allen was due a $5 million roster bonus on March 17, which set a deadline for when the Chargers needed to move him.
A six-time Pro Bowl selection, including five consecutive from 2017-21, Allen holds franchise records in receptions (904) and receiving yards (10,530) among wide receivers. He surpassed 900 career receptions faster than any player in NFL history, doing so last season in his 139th career game. Along with his six 1,000-yard receiving seasons, he recorded five of the seven 100-catch campaigns in team history, setting a franchise record in 2023 with 108 receptions.
Without those two, the Chargers might have the worst receiving group in the NFL, to the point that rookie Ladd McConkey might be the No. 1 guy. He was the No. 34 overall pick in the 2024 draft out of Georgia. The Bolts traded up with New England to get him. McConkey 30 receptions for 478 yards (15.9 avg.) and two touchdowns in nine games for the Bulldogs in 2023. Both Harbaugh and new offensive coordinator Greg Roman have been very run-heavy in the NFL, and when their teams pass the ball, they’ve thrown to tight ends more than most.
The Bolts also lost Pro Bowl running back Austin Ekeler in free agency but signed former Ravens tailbacks Gus Edwards and JK Dobbins. Both those guys played under Roman in Baltimore previously. Dobbins, 25, has averaged 5.8 yards per carry during his career, which is the highest among running backs with at least 200 carries since 2020. He has produced a run of 10 or more yards on 15.4% of his attempts (36 of 234 carries) over the past four seasons, which ranks behind only Nick Chubb (17.1%) and Jaylen Warren (15.5%) among running backs. The only issue with Dobbins is staying healthy. Over the past three seasons, he was sidelined for 42 of the Ravens’ 51 games, including the last 16 of last season because of a torn Achilles.
Defensively, the Chargers have two stellar pass-rushers in Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack – many though Mack might be traded this offseason because of his huge salary. It’s possible he could be moved during the season.
