Latest 2024 NFL Head Coach Changes
There’s a lot of time left in the 2023-2024 NFL Season. The final wild card game has yet to be played, and the Super Bowl doesn’t happen until the second Sunday of February. But although that’s true, for some teams, like the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers, the search for a head coach has begun. Check out the latest rumors regarding NFL head coaching positions.

Patriots hire Jerrod Mayo to replace Bill Belichick
After Bill Belichick and New England decided to part ways after over two decades, it took the Patriots a few hours to hand the keys to Jerrod Mayo, a former New England player and a Patriots’ linebacker coach.
Mayo’s first job will be to decide if moving up in April’s NFL Draft to pick Caleb Williams or Drake Maye to play QB is the right move. The good thing for Mayo is that New England’s defense is solid. So he can pretty much concentrate on rebuilding the offense.
Belichick may be headed to Dallas
Jerry Jones is going to fire Mike McCarthy. The Cowboys entered their wild card against the Green Bay Packers one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl. Green Bay obliterated Dallas 48-32.
McCarthy knows his days are numbered. Jones has already spoken to Belichick. It’s a matter of time before Bill gets the nod. The first thing Belichick will do is hire Josh McDaniels to run the offense, while Double-B will concentrate on the defense.
Jim Harbaugh and Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Tom Monken are the hot names
Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is rumored to be considering a jump back into the NFL. Harbaugh won’t have the same team in Ann Arbor next season that he did this season.
Already, Blake Corum and J.J. McCarthy, the Wolverines’ top running back and their quarterback, have declared for the NFL Draft. If Harbaugh wasn’t going back to the NFL, those two may have decided to stay. It’s obvious that McCarthy’s and Corum’s coach had a discussion with his star players.
The Chargers interviewed Harbaugh on January 15. The Raiders are also considering making a play for the Michigan HC.
Harbaugh coached Stanford and the San Francisco 49ers. So Jim knows the Bay Area.
The other hot name is Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Tom Monken. Baltimore’s offense is one of the best in the NFL right now. So Monken’s name has been brought up for the HC job at the Chargers and possibly the Seahawks after seeing how badly the Cowboys D played against the Packers.
The longer a team waits to hire a coach, the more likely Monken’s name will end up in the hat. Because Monken is Baltimore’s offensive coordinator, teams looking for an HC may have to wait until after Super Bowl 58.
Commanders leaning towards hiring Johnson
Washington hasn’t said much about the coach they’d like to hire. One name that hasn’t come up is current offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy.
Instead, the name Ben Johnson, Detroit’s offensive coordinator, appears to be the man that D.C. wants. Johnson has more football work to do, but Washington really likes the way he manages games.
Carolina may have to lower head coach expectations
The Panthers could have a bigger issue than teams like the Chargers, Raiders, and Commanders. Carolina not only lacks talent, but they also lack draft picks.
So finding a coach on the level of a Bill Belichick, Ben Johnson, or Tom Monken may not be possible. Few coaches are going to want to ditch their current coordinator positions to take on the challenge that is the Carolina Panthers.
The Panthers have said they’ve interviewed plenty of candidates, but no announcement yet. So it remains to be seen if Carolina is just waiting or if some of the candidates they interviewed called them back and said no dice.
