Liberty vs. Aces 2023 WNBA Finals Game 2 Odds and Preview

By Jeff Stinger

The Las Vegas Aces host another contest against the New York Liberty in Game 2 of the 2023 WNBA Finals. It was a comfortable Game 1 win for the defending champions over the weekend. Las Vegas pulled away in the second half of the game to finish the night with a 17-point lead over their competitors. They look to keep the momentum going before heading out on the road to play the Liberty in uncharted territory. However, we expect the Liberty to keep things tighter this time around. They can’t afford to give up a two-game lead versus a ruthless team like the Aces.

Why Bet on the New York Liberty?

The New York Liberty struggled to keep up with the Las Vegas Aces during the second half of Game 1. The visitors scored a combined 33 points across the final two quarters, while the Aces took off with 53 points to close the night 99 to 82. Head coach Sandy Brondello needs to employ new strategies to prevent a repeat of their disappointing defeat.

Sunday proved to be a tough shooting night for the Liberty. New York shot 46.4% from the field, going nine of 29 from deep and nine of 13 from the line. The team recorded 32 points in the paint. Breanna Stewart topped her team’s scoring figures with 21 points on eight of 19 shooting from the field. The forward also hit four of her six attempts from the line. However, her efforts weren’t enough to get her team out of the ditch. They had difficulty containing Las Vegas’ starting five despite four other players finishing the night with double-figures. This squad needs to up their resistance against an offense-heavy team to stay in the game.

Defensively, the Liberty kept up with their opponents on the rebounding side. They collected 30 total rebounds as a team, including 24 defensive and six offensive boards. The visitors had six steals on top of three blocks and converted more points off turnovers–logging 16 points in the process.

Why Bet on the Las Vegas Aces?

The Aces already set the tempo in the opening game and are expected to perpetuate the same pace in Game 2. They dropped five games since July 9 and are averaging a stellar 86.2 points on 45.1% shooting.

Their first 2023 WNBA Finals meeting with the New York Liberty went well. Las Vegas finished the night with 54.7% shooting and 40.9% from downtown. They were also the better team from the line and hit 87.0% of their looks from the line. Jackie Young led the charge with 26 points on nine of 15 shooting and three of five from the line. Kelsey Plum matched her with 26 points, five boards, and an assist, while Chelsea Gray had 20, six, and nine in Game 1.

Defensively, the hosts collected four more rebounds than their opponents, closing the night with 30 defensive and four offensive boards. By the end of the four quarters, Las Vegas recorded seven steals, and five blocks, while matching the Liberty’s 11 total turnovers. It’s worth noting that the Aces held the Liberty to 16 and 17 points in the third and final quarter, respectively. We’ve seen quality plays on both ends of the floor, easily making the hosts Game 2 favorites.

Liberty vs. Aces Expert Betting Prediction

The hosts are the favored team for obvious reasons. Other than having a home advantage, they’ve been the best organization all year. It also helps that they haven’t lost in the playoffs yet and have yet to lose a game since August 28. They proved that they were the better team in Game 1.

However, that’s not to say that Liberty can’t apply pressure. New York won two of their last four games against the Aces, and they’re the only team this season that can pull off a sneaky road victory. It’s strange to see them trailing any team when looking at the numbers, but covering the spread and a surprise victory is never off the table when this team is in the conversation.
