Miami Dolphins 2024 NFL Season Win/Loss Total

By Hank Blaine

The Miami Dolphins have been an NFL Wild-Card team in back-to-back seasons, but unable to win a playoff game since 2000. We expect the Fins to reach the postseason again in 2024 and perhaps even win the AFC if they can get the conference’s top seed. We break down Tua Tagovailoa & Co.

Miami’s schedule ranks as the 24th-toughest in the NFL this season as its opponents combined for a .488 winning percentage in 2023. The Dolphins open the season with consecutive home games for the first time since 2019 and just the third time in the past 25 years (2011). They are 3.5-point favorites for Week 1 vs. Jacksonville.

The Fins’ 2024 schedule features five prime time games, tied for the most in a regular season in franchise history (1997, 2004) and their most in 20 years. Miami’s Thanksgiving matchup in Green Bay marks the first time the Dolphins have played on Thanksgiving since 2011. Miami hasn’t gone under its win total since 2017. This is the Dolphins’ second straight season with a 9.5 win total, tied for their highest since 1999 (10).

A Top Wildcard

Miami was in position to potentially earn the AFC’s top seed last season and win the AFC East before collapsing down the stretch with a 56-19 loss in Baltimore in Week 17 and then a 21-14 home defeat to Buffalo in Week 18 that gave the Bills the division title. Buffalo dominated time of possession and out gained Miami by nearly 200 yards. The Bills trailed 14-7 before Deonte Harty returned a punt 96 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and that changed everything.

That dropped the Dolphins to the AFC’s sixth seed, and they were dominated in a 26-7 loss in Kansas City in the Wild-Card Game. On a very cold day, Tua Tagovailoa was pressured relentlessly by the NFL’s second-ranked defense, wide receiver Tyreek Hill had a 53-yard TD catch but was otherwise shut down in his return to Kansas City and the Dolphins finished with 264 yards in all. They still have not won a playoff game since Dec. 30, 2000.

Is the Roster Looking Great?

Tagovailoa comes off his best season and could sign a huge new extension any day now. The former Alabama star led the NFL in passing yards with 4,624, while setting career highs in passing touchdowns (29), completion percentage (69.3%) and games played (18, including the playoffs). It was his first injury-free season since entering the league in 2020. However, he and the Dolphins finished 1-6 against teams with a winning record last year. Miami has started 25 different quarterbacks since Hall of Famer Dan Marino retired after the 1999 season. Tagovailoa has the fifth year of his rookie contract remaining in 2024 and could be franchise tagged the following year.

All-Pro receiver Tyreek Hill also is hoping for a new contract even if he’s only entering Year 2 of his four-year, $120 million deal, but Justin Jefferson reset the receiver market this offseason by signing a record-setting deal with Minnesota. Hill is coming off a season in which he led the NFL in receiving yards (1,799) and receiving touchdowns (13), while having 119 catches which earned him All-Pro honors.

Miami did lose three good players this offseason in free agency in defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel and guard Robert Hunt. Last season was the most prolific year of Van Ginkel’s career. He played in all 17 games and set career-highs in sacks (6) and passes defended (8), adding a pick-six for good measure. Van Ginkel earned a 91.1 PFF grade on over 700 defensive snaps, which ranked seventh among all edge rushers in the NFL.

While the Dolphins would have been better on the field in 2024 with those players, it made sense not to match the offers they received. Miami is expected to receive a third-round compensatory pick for each of them. Safety Brandon Jones, edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel, linebacker Jerome Baker and defensive tackle Raekwon Davis all left, too.

The biggest-name addition is former Pro Bowl receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who makes a truly frightening trio with Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Beckham isn’t close to what he used to be and is on a one-year deal. The 31-year-old three-time Pro Bowler is now set to play for his fifth NFL team. Over the past three years, Beckham has been on three rosters – the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams and Baltimore Ravens – and played in just 28 games.

Miami also signed linebacker Jordyn Brooks, cornerback Kendall Fuller and tight end Jonnu Smith. The team also will break in a new defensive coordinator in Anthony Weaver. He most recently served as the defensive line coach and associate head coach for the Baltimore Ravens, where he’d been since 2021. The Dolphins hired Vic Fangio last year after firing Josh Boyer, but parted ways with Fangio this offseason.
