Top NBA Betting Picks of the Week – April 1st, 2024

By Hank Blaine

The Sacramento Kings will be without Sixth Man of the Year favorite Malik Monk for 4-6 weeks after he injured his knee on Friday vs. Dallas. Monk leads the NBA in points (1,110) and assists (370) off the bench this season – something only Lou Williams (2018-2019) did for a full season since starters were first tracked in 1970-1971. Sacramento also recently lost starting guard Kevin Huerter to a season-ending injury, so it is thin in the backcourt and unlikely to make much noise in the play-in tournament. Here’s a look at two intriguing NBA matchups early this week with picks.

Top NBA Betting Picks of the Week (April 1st, 2024)

Atlanta Hawks vs. Chicago Bulls

  • When: Monday, April 1st, 2024, 8:00 PM ET
  • Where: United Center, Chicago, IL
  • TV: NBC Sports Chicago, Bally Sports SE-ATL
  • Radio: 92.9 “The Game” WZGC FM (Hawks) // 670 The Score AM (Bulls)
  • Stream: NBA League Pass
  • NBA Odds: Hawks (+2.5) // Bulls (-2.5)

This could be an Eastern Conference play-in tournament preview, as Chicago sits ninth in the East and Atlanta 10th. The No. 9 and 10 seeds would play one another, and it’s doubtful either moves any higher than No. 8 or drops lower than 10th. It’s the second of a back-to-back for the Bulls.

Atlanta remains without injured All-Star point guard Trae Young but had been playing really well on a four-game winning streak before a 122-113 loss in Milwaukee on Saturday. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Atlanta’s De’Andre Hunter and Bogdan Bogdanovic midway through the final period cut the Bucks’ lead to 94-89. Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez answered with 3s for Milwaukee to quickly push the advantage back to double figures, and that was that.

Dejounte Murray has been great since Young got hurt and had 20 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds. Murray has six double-doubles over his past 10 games. He finished the month of March averaging 26.7 points, 9.2 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 2.1 steals in 38.3 minutes of action. Murray was the only player in the NBA in March to average at least 26.0 points, 9.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals. He scored 30-or-more points five times in his 15 games, the most such games in his career, in addition to at least 40 points in three games.

Bogdanovic finished with 38 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. It was his second-highest point total of the season and first double-double. He scored 17 points in the fourth quarter while sinking two 3-pointers in the final minute. Bogdanovic’s .908 free throw percentage ranks fourth in the NBA this season and is on pace to be the second-highest clip from the charity stripe in a single season in team history, trailing only Danilo Gallinari (.925 FT%, 2020-21 season).

Clint Capela rejected his 400th shot as a Hawk in Saturday’s loss, becoming just the 10th player in club history to record 400 blocks. He finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal in 27 minutes. Since March 8, Capela is averaging 12.9 points, 11.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 26.7 minutes, one of only four players over that time to average at least 12.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks.

In addition to missing Young and Saddiq Bey (out for the season) on Saturday, the Hawks also were without injured forwards Onyeka Okongwu (left big toe sprain) and Jalen Johnson (right ankle). Consider them questionable here.

Chicago is 2-0 vs. Atlanta this season and has won seven of the past 10 overall in the series. DeMar DeRozan is averaging 27.7 ppg, 6.1 apg and 5.1 rpg in his last 10 games versus Atlanta and Nikola Vucevic has tallied a double-double in three-straight games in the series.

NBA Betting Pick: Bulls

Dallas Mavericks vs. Golden State Warriors

  • When: Tuesday, March 26th, 2024, 7:30 PM ET
  • Where: Chase Center, San Francisco, CA
  • TV: TNT
  • Radio: 97.1 The Freak FM (Mavericks) // 95.7 The Game FM (Warriors)
  • Stream: NBA League Pass
  • NBA Odds: TBA

Important game in the Western Conference playoff race. The Mavs currently sit sixth in the West and would avoid the play-in tournament in that spt. Golden State holds the final play-in tournament spot but Houston is right on the Warriors’ tails. Monitor the status of both Klay Thompson and Jonathan Kuminga for the Dubs as both are dealing with some knee issues – nothing too serious.

Since January 30, the Warriors have the second-most wins (21) in the NBA, trailing only Boston (22). Golden State ranks first in rebounding (48.2 rpg), tied with San Antonio for first in assists (30.3 apg), tied seventh in scoring (117.2 ppg), and fifth in 3-pointers made (14.2). Golden State has allowed 111.4 points (tied 11th in the league) and 45.6 opponent field goal percentage (fourth) since January 30; prior to that, they were allowing 119.0 points per game (22nd) and an opponent field goal percentage of 47.6 (17th).

The Warriors are ranked first in the NBA (46.8 rpg) in rebounding despite being the shortest team (averaging 77.6 inches or 6-foot-5 1/2). The Dubs have outrebounded their opponent in 45 games this season. Golden State is ranked third in offensive rebounding (12.4).

Stephen Curry has made three-or-more 3-pointers in each of the last 10 games he has played in, the current longest active streak. Curry holds the NBA single-season record for the most consecutive games with three-or-more 3-pointers with 24 consecutive games (Feb. 6-Apr. 2, 2019). Curry leads the NBA in 3-pointers made and it’s his NBA-record fifth season with 300-or-more 3-pointers.

Should the Warriors finish with an overall winning record and a home record under .500, they will join the 2021-22 Nets (44-38 overall, 20-21 at home) as the only teams in NBA history to accomplish the feat.

The Mavericks lead the Warriors in the all-time series, 92-82 (.529) and hold a record of 53-34 at home and 39-48 on the road. Dallas leads the season series 2-0 after a 132-122 win in San Francisco (12/30/23) and a 109-99 win in Dallas (3/13/24). In 18 career regular-season games against the Warriors, Mavs star Luka Dončić is averaging 30.2 points (.480 FG%, .405 3FG%), 8.0 rebounds and 8.2 assists (Dallas has gone 13-5 in those games). Dončić has 75 triple-doubles in his career and is 2 away from passing James Harden for 8th on the NBA’s all-time list for triple-doubles (76).
