Top NBA Betting Picks of the Week – March 13th, 2023

By Hank Blaine

What’s going on with Golden State Warriors former All-Star Andrew Wiggins? He hasn’t played since Feb. 13 due to a personal matter and now might not again this season. Through 37 games, Wiggins was averaging 17.1 points, five rebounds and 2.3 assists on 47.3 percent shooting from the field and 39.6 percent from 3-point land so it would be a major loss as the Dubs try to repeat. Here’s a look at two early-week intriguing matchups. Check back for odds.

Top NBA Betting Picks of the Week (March 13th, 2023)

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Dallas Mavericks

  • When: Monday, March 13, 2023, 7:30 PM ET
  • Where: American Airlines Center, Dallas, TX
  • TV: ESPN, BSSW-DAL, BSSE-MEM
  • Radio: 92.9 FM ESPN (Grizzlies) // 97.1 The Freak (Mavericks)
  • Live Stream: NBA League Pass
  • NBA Betting Odds: Grizzlies (+1) // Mavericks (-1)

Could be a Western Conference playoff preview but neither team is likely to have its best player here. We know that the Grizzlies are without All-Star Ja Morant as he’s away from the team to deal with some personal issues. It’s not clear when he will be back.

“I can’t share details. There’s definitely steps that are going to need to be met personally and professionally as he deals with some stuff personally to get better. Then obviously the expectations on the team, he’s going to have some things that he’s going to have to clear to know what the expectations are when he does return,” Coach Taylor Jenkins said.

The Mavericks played without superstars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving on Saturday in Memphis, which the Grizzlies won 112-108. Doncic, who is dealing with a left thigh strain, was ruled out earlier in the week. Irving is dealing with right foot soreness and was ruled out 90 minutes before tipoff. Irving should play here but it’s not clear if Doncic will. He is averaging 24.2 points (.460 FG%), 8.0 rebounds and 6.7 assists in 11 career games against Memphis (Dallas has gone 8-3 in those games).

Dallas is 5-8 since Irving joined the team after a blockbuster trade with the Brooklyn Nets. That includes a 3-6 record in games Doncic and Irving have both played. Rookie David Roddy scored a career-high 24 points, including 17 points in the fourth quarter, as the Grizzlies rallied for the win Saturday. Roddy connected on 7 of 8 shots in the fourth, including 3 of 4 from outside the arc. Desmond Bane led the Grizzlies with 25 points, while Jaren Jackson Jr. finished with 14 points.

Tim Hardaway led Dallas with 23 points. After scoring eight points in Dallas’ March 2 win over the 76ers, Hardaway has scored 21, 24, 17, and 23 points in the four games since. Rookie Jalen Hardy had 22 points in the first start of his career.

The Mavericks are one of only three teams the Grizzlies have not defeated this season. The others are the Los Angeles Clippers (who won the teams’ first of three matchups) and Boston Celtics (who swept the two-game series).

NBA Betting Pick: Mavericks

Milwaukee Bucks vs. Phoenix Suns

  • When: Tuesday, March 14, 2023, 10:00 PM ET
  • Where: Footprint Center, Phoenix, AZ
  • TV: BSAZ, BSWI
  • Radio: WTMJ 620 AM (Bucks) // KMVP-FM 98.7 FM (Suns)
  • Live Stream: NBA League Pass
  • NBA Betting Odds: TBA

Potential NBA Finals preview. Kevin Durant was all set to make his Suns debut last Thursday but injured his ankle in warmups and now will miss another couple weeks. Durant has played in three games with the Suns since being acquired from the Brooklyn Nets, averaging 26.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Durant shot 69% with Phoenix in those three victories — the highest field goal percentage in a player’s first three games with a team in NBA history (minimum 40 field goals attempted).

Jae Crowder will be making his return to Phoenix after not playing one game for the Suns this season. He was traded to Brooklyn as part of the Durant trade but then rerouted to Milwaukee. Crowder now finds himself on the opposite sideline of the 2021 Finals, when his Suns commanded a 2-0 series lead before the Bucks rallied for four straight games behind Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday to claim the league’s crown.

“Jae’s exceeded our expectations,” said Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer. “Coming in, his conditioning, he looks good. He doesn’t look like he gets winded or tired. He wants more. He wants to play those last few minutes, get the reps in, get up and down. He’s in a good place physically and I think mentally, and we’re excited about how his body is and where he is.”

The Bucks opened this West Coast trip with a 125-116 OT loss at the Warriors on Saturday as star Giannis Antetokounmpo missed his third straight game, sidelined by a sore right hand. Brook Lopez blocked five shots on Saturday, just the second time this season that he’s blocked 5+ shots in consecutive games. Lopez is averaging a career-high 2.52 blocks per game and currently ranks second in the league with 10 games with 5+ blocks and leads the NBA in total blocks (166).

Bobby Portis Jr. scored 15 points and hauled in 13 rebounds in Saturday’s game for his 33rd double-double of the season (T-6 in NBA). Of Portis Jr.’s 33 double-doubles this season, a league-high 20 of them have come off the bench.

The Bucks look for their third straight win in this series as they beat visiting Phoenix 104-101 on Feb. 26 when Giannis was also out. Jrue Holiday scored 33 points and produced a critical steal, and Brook Lopez made a tiebreaking layup with 24.8 seconds left. Holiday led all scorers, while Lopez had 22 points and 12 rebounds. Khris Middleton added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Devin Booker scored 24 points, Deandre Ayton had 22 and Chris Paul added 18 for Phoenix. Ayton also had 11 rebounds.
