New England Patriots 2023 Straight-Up Overview
New England had a disappointing 2022. A lot of it had to do at the quarterback position where after a successful rookie campaign, New England starter Mac Jones last season suffered injuries that kept him on the bench.
Baily Zappe, a rookie in 2022, stepped it up in a few games. But, overall, New England struggled to an 8-9 record. Hovering around .500 is a bad season for, maybe, the greatest franchises in pro football.
So much is expected of coach Bill Belichick and the Patriots this season. Belichick doesn’t like losing, which is why he hired Bill O’Brien, the former Alabama offensive coordinator and Houston Texans head coach, to run the offense.
O’Brien didn’t coach Jones. But he did sit down with Jones after Mac’s final season in Tuscaloosa in preparation of taking over as Bama’s offensive coordinator. So Jones and O’Brien know each other well.
The quarterback and offensive coordinator connection in New England could pay massive dividends in 2023. The Patriots added JuJu Smith-Schuster at wide receiver and the offensive line is good.
O’Brien will find ways for Jones to have success, which is what Belichick expects. If it works, the Patriots offense will surprise because O’Brien, although not a great head coach, is a crafty play-caller.
On defense, the Patriots should return to the Belichick glory days. As long as Belichick is in charge, the defense will never be bad and it wasn’t in 2022. Any improvement makes New England’s D a top five unit.
Overall, New England has the chance to be one of this season’s surprise teams. The Patriots boast an offense with massive potential and a defense that’s already a top ten unit. Belichick won’t stand for two losing seasons.
New England will lose 6 games, a huge improvement from last season’s 8-9 record. The Patriots prove the naysayers wrong and go 11-6.
New England Patriots 2023 SU Record Prediction: 11-6
New England Patriots 2023 Against the Spread Overview
The Pats went 7-9-1 ATS last season. New England shouldn’t be anywhere close to that terrible record.
Instead of 7-9-1, the Patriots will keep oddsmakers and sports bettors guessing all season. A similar 11-6 ATS record to New England’s SU record is possible.
New England Patriots ATS Record Prediction: 11-6
New England Patriots 2023 Over/Under Overview
New England’s offense will surprise. By the time oddsmakers adjust, the Patriots will have a winning over to under record.
Last season, the record was 8-9. This season, the record should be 10-7.
New England Patriots 2023 Over/Under Record Prediction: 10-7
