2022 North Carolina Tar Heels Analysis
The North Carolina Tar Heels weren’t supposed to play past the second-round. UNC entered the tournament an 8-seed after VA Tech dominated the Heels 72-59 in the ACC Tournament. Many believed North Carolina would lose in the first round to Marquette. But the Tar Heels exploded for a 95-63 victory. The 93-86 win over Baylor followed and then came the 73-66 win over UCLA and 69-49 beating of Saint Peter’s.
In every game, North Carolina exceeded on offense versus a strong defensive squad, which isone of the reasons the Tar Heels are a legit team to win the title. North Carolina is no normal 8-seed. Armando Bacot is the best big still playing in the tournament. Bacot averages 16.5 points and 12.5 boards per. He feeds off the play of one of the top backcourts in the country, R.J. Davis and Caleb Love. Both Love and Davis can take over a game. Davis dropped 30 onto Baylor.
Love scored 30 against UCLA. Brady Manek can shoot the three, which requires opponents to step out and guard him at the top of the arc. That opens things up for Bacot. Hubert Davis is a relatively new head coach. The former UNC player has pushed all the right buttons, though. He also knows how to beat Duke, which is why North Carolina is a legit Final Four squad no matter what their seed implies.
Odds on North Carolina to Win the 2022 National Championship
At +504, it’s impossible not to like the North Carolina Tar Heels to win the title. The Heels are the only Final Four team that has beaten a 1-seed. Duke beat a 4-seed to make it to the Final Four. Kansas played a 10-seed. Villanova played 5-seed Houston.
North Carolina beat 1-Baylor to make it to the Sweet 16. Then, they trounced 4-seed UCLA. Sure, Saint Peter’s had no shot, but the Peacocks had beaten 2-seed Kentucky and 3-seed Purdue. The odds should be closer to +300, maybe, +400. Like Villanova, UNC is getting no respect.
North Carolina Tar Heels Prediction
No 8-seed has ever won the title. But this is the most talented 8-seed to ever make it to the Final Four. Heck, North Carolina might be the most talented 8-seed to ever play in a March Madness Tournament. What makes UNC so difficult to defend against is that unlike their other Final Four contenders, the Tar Heels have four go to guys in Bacot, Love, Davis, and Manek. All four can take the winning shot.
Manek’s range is ridiculous while Bacot can beat the double-team or find Love or Davis open for a three-point shot. Not only that, but the bench players and other starter, Leaky Black, know their roles. Almost as important? Hubert Davis has finally gotten his team to gel. UNC looked terrible versus Virginia Tech. But no team was as impressive in their first tournament game than the North Carolina Tar Heels.
So unless North Carolina implodes, and that’s doubtful to happen versus rival Duke or in the title contest, the Tar Heels offer overlay odds to cut down the nets on April 4.
