Ohio State Buckeyes 2023 Season Win/Loss Total
Could Ohio State coach Ryan Day be on the hot seat entering the 2023 college football season? That seems impossible but the No. 4 Buckeyes have lost back-to-back games to Michigan and that’s simply not allowed. A third straight loss could be it for Day. The 2023 Buckeyes return 16 starters (seven offense, seven defense, two specialists) from last year’s team that appeared in the College Football Playoff for the third time in the last four seasons.

Sneaking into the Playoffs
Despite not reaching the 2022 Big Ten title game, Ohio State snuck into last year’s College Football Playoff and nearly upset No. 1 Georgia in the Peach Bowl semifinal, falling 42-41 in a thriller. The Buckeyes had a chance to win late but a 50-yard field goal attempt missed left. Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud completed 23-of-34 passes for 348 yards and four touchdowns. A pair of receivers went for more than 100 yards on the night with Emeka Egbuka leading with 112 yards and a touchdown. Marvin Harrison Jr. added 106 yards and two scores.
While Stroud was the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft, Harrison and Egbuka are back and the best 1-2 receiving duo in the nation. Harrison was Ohio State’s first unanimous All-American receiver last year and the Big Ten Conference’s Richter-Howard Wide Receiver of the Year as a sophomore in 2022 after catching 77 passes for 1,263 yards and 14 touchdowns. His reception and yardage totals were each fourth all-time at Ohio State for a single season and his TD total was tied for second with David Boston (1997), trailing only Terry Glenn’s 17 in 1995.
Egbuka ninth nationally in receiving yards with 1,151 and ninth nationally with 46 receptions of 10-or-more yards last year. His true sophomore campaign included 74 receptions and 10 touchdowns in addition to his impressive yardage total of 1,151 that ranks fifth at Ohio State for a single season. He was 15th nationally with 19 catches of 20-or-more yards.
Will the roster maintain its power?
Who starts at QB? It will either be Kyle McCord or Devin Brown. Both are expected to play in Saturday’s season opener at Indiana. McCord has the most experience of the two, throwing for 606 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games over the last two years. Brown played in just two games last year. If Brown does win the starting job, he will likely be the starter for the next two seasons and that could mean McCord will likely transfer elsewhere to pursue a starting job.
The Bucks also have a stellar 1-2 punch at running back in TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams. Henderson was slowed by injury in 2022 and played in just eight games. He was second on the team in rushing with 571 yards and six rushing touchdowns. Henderson needs just 181 yards to become the 28th Buckeye to rush for at least 2,000 career yards. He has caught 31 passes for 340 yards and has scored 26 touchdowns (21 rushing; 5 receiving). Williams led Ohio State in rushing in 2022 with 824 yards and a team-best 14 touchdowns, and he was named third-team all-Big Ten Conference by both the coaches and the media.
A Look into the stats
Ohio State has led the Big Ten in scoring offense in 6 straight seasons (40+ PPG each season). It’s tied for the longest streak of 40-PPG seasons in FBS since 2000. OSU has scored 20+ points in 74 straight games, an FBS record dating to 2017.
Ohio State lost its final two games of last season and in Week 1 at Indiana looks to avoid losing 3 straight games since losing the last 4 games of the 2011 season. The Buckeyes are 30-point favorites. Coach Ryan Day has a 31-2 record vs Big Ten opponents as head coach but only 1-2 vs. Michigan – so he is 30-0 against everyone else. His 45-6 overall record is second-best in FBS history for a minimum of 50 games coached. OSU is ranked in the top-6 of AP Preseason Poll for 11th straight season. It has lost two or fewer games in 11 straight seasons since going 6-7 in 2011. That’s the second-longest active streak in FBS (Alabama: 12).
Ohio State has a 248-46 record in the FBS since 2000, eight more wins than any other team. The Buckeyes have won 23 straight season openers (last loss: 1999 at Miami, FL) and 18 of their last 19 road games (only loss: 2021 at Michigan).
