Oilers vs. Panthers 2024 Stanley Cup Final Game 5 Odds & Preview

By Hank Blaine

The Florida Panthers couldn’t win the Stanley Cup in a sweep but can clinch the first championship in franchise history at home in Game 5 of the Finals against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night, and the Cats are favored to finish the series.

Florida had been 5-0 vs. Edmonton this season before losing Game 4 on Saturday, 8-1 on the road, as the Oilers avoided the sweep. Connor McDavid factored on half of the team’s goals to the franchise’s first victory in the Final in 18 years. McDavid had a goal and three assists to become the first player since 1987 to record four points in a Stanley Cup Final game in which his team faced elimination. Also has set a new NHL record for most assists in a playoff year with 32, breaking Wayne Gretzky’s mark of 31.

Why Bet on the Edmonton Oilers?

The Oilers became the ninth team in NHL history to force Game 5 after facing a 3-0 deficit in the Stanley Cup Final – and fourth in a row following the 2021 Canadiens (lost in 5 – a team that featured Corey Perry), 2014 Rangers (lost in 5) and 2012 Devils (lost in 6). This marks the 25th consecutive Stanley Cup Final that will require at least five games.

The Oilers improved to 3-0 in potential elimination games this postseason, which ties 1998 (3-1) and 1990 (3-0) for their most such wins in a single playoff year. Edmonton now aims to become the fourth team in NHL history to force a Game 6 after trailing 3-0 in a Stanley Cup Final. The only instances were by the 2012 Devils, 1945 Red Wings and 1942 Maple Leafs. The Oilers can become the first team in NHL history to win Game 5 on the road after facing a 3-0 series deficit in the Stanley Cup Final.

McDavid’s 38 playoff points are fifth most in a single postseason after Wayne Gretzky’s 47 points in 1985, Mario Lemieux’s 44 in 1991, Gretzky’s 43 in 1988 and Gretzky’s 40 points in 1993 with Los Angeles. McDavid has 19 points after a loss this post-season, which is the highest in NHL history). Nine players in NHL history have recorded 10-plus points when facing elimination in a single playoff year. McDavid (1-6—7 in 3 GP) is three points away from joining this list.

For the second straight year, there will be only one sweep in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. This is the first time in the NHL’s expansion era (since 1967-68) that there have been one or fewer best-of-seven sweeps in consecutive postseasons.

“They’re going to be much more prepared for Game 5 than they were in Game 4,” Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said of Florida, which is 8-3 at home in these playoffs and has won four straight. “There are the distractions of winning the game, having a sweep, you have family and friends coming in for what they’re hoping for, having celebrations. Going back home, now you have been beaten, they’re going to respond, they’re going to be better. We have a pretty good feel on what their team identity is and how they’re going to play, but we can’t control that. We’re focused on enjoying this as much as we can.”

Forward Evander Kane has missed the last two games due to a sports hernia for the Oilers but did travel to Florida and could return. Kane has been a disappointment as he tries to play through the injury, with just four goals and four assists in these playoffs.

Why Bet on the Florida Panthers?

Florida’s Sergei Bobrovsky had been marvelous in these playoffs and remains the Conn Smythe Trophy favorite despite being pulled in Game 4 after stopping just 11 of 16 shots. Backup Anthony Stolarz allowed three goals on 19 shots in the first playoff appearance of his NHL career.

Bobrovsky stopped 82 of 86 shots for a 1.33 goals-against average and .953 save percentage in winning the first three games of the Final, including a 32-save shutout in a 3-0 victory in Game 1. Edmonton’s offense finally broke loose Saturday. It was the first time Bobrovsky didn’t finish a game he started since he gave up five goals on 16 shots in the first two periods of a 6-4 loss at the Toronto Maple Leafs on April. 1.

“He’s played an awful lot of hockey,” Coach Paul Maurice said of pulling him. “My number [of goals] on Bob is probably five in general. That was the decision. … If you think you’re mounting a comeback, rarely does the goalie make a difference for you. There’s something that happens at the other end of the ice.”

Florida does need more from star Matthew Tkachuk as he has no goals, one assist, 11 shots, minus-3 rating and three minor penalties in the series.
