Overrated 2023 College Football Teams to Bet Against

By Hank Blaine

College Football kicks off their 2023-24 season on Saturday, August 26. Like every season, there are teams that qualify as standouts and teams that head into the season overrated. This year, overrated squads include a couple of NCAAF National Championship favorites. Check out the five overrated college football teams that we should have success betting against the spread this season.

5 Overrated 2023 College Football Teams You Can Bet Against This Season

Alabama Crimson Tide

Bama checks almost all the boxes for a return trip to the College Football Playoff. The Crimson Tide should have a terrific defense, the offensive line is stout, the coaching staff is as good as it gets, and the rushing attack will be formidable.

But Bama may lack the one ingredient that takes them to the CFP. After a season where Bryce Young played quarterback, who will pilot the Crimson Tide offense?

The player with the most upside, Ty Simpson, is a freshman. Jalen Milroe has the most experience but his passing skills have yet to develop. Bama could have a bad season against the spread.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Like Bama, Ohio State has the look of a college football title contender on paper. But also like Bama, the Buckeyes must replace a first round NFL Draft pick quarterback.

CJ Stroud went second to the Houston Texans, a pick right after the Panthers selected Young. Stroud was Ohio State’s starting quarterback for two seasons.

Kyle McCord should get the call to start. McCord has ability and does get to throw to Marvin Harrison Jr., but McCord and the Bucks have a sneaky difficult schedule: at Notre Dame, versus Penn State, at Wisconsin, and at Michigan are Ohio State’s toughest matchups. Covering could be an issue.

Clemson Tigers

Sophomore Cabe Klubnik took over for DJ Uagielelei late last season and played well. Klubnik is another one of those quarterback starters that must prove himself, though.

More importantly for Clemson, ACC opponents may have caught up. North Carolina and Florida State could be better than the Tigers.

Clemson starts the season an underlay -12.5 road chalk versus Duke. If the Tigers don’t cover, we should expect a long season of non-covers, and possibly more straight up losses than any one expects.

Penn State Nittany Lions

The Nittany Lions should be good this season. However, starting quarterback Drew Allar might struggle.

There are so many quality quarterbacks in the college football that you can have a fantastic overall team, but if your QB doesn’t step it up, you won’t cover spreads. You may even lose straight up to inferior teams.

Allar is a sophomore. He’s listed as Penn State’s QB1. The Big Ten is deep this season. So don’t expect the Lions to roll over opponents.

Oklahoma Sooners

For the first time since 1999, the Oklahoma Sooners will enter the season off a losing campaign. Oklahoma has the makings of a surprise team, but we shouldn’t hold our breath.

Brett Venables’ vaunted defensive scheme didn’t have the players to be effective last season. The scheme may be effective it may not. We must remember that Venables went to the Big 12, which got deeper after adding Houston, Cincinnati, and UCF, from the ACC.

More quality teams, TCU, Baylor, Texas Tech, and Kansas State, play in the Big 12 than in the ACC. So, maybe, Venables’ system won’t work unless he recruits five-star defenders.

In any case, quarterback Dillon Gabriel must play without thousand-yard rusher Eric Gray and his top target from last season, Marvin Mims. The Sooners will struggle in plenty of games to win straight up, much less cover.
