The NFL’s oldest rivalry will be revisited early into the new season, as the Green Bay Packers pay their annual visit to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Bears. The Packers are entering a new era in the fabled organization without Aaron Rodgers at the helm, which puts the Bears in a rather fortuitous position in hopes of becoming the next kings of the NFC North.

Why Bet on the Green Bay Packers?
Since the 1992 season, the Green Bay Packers have had only two all-time-great quarterbacks running the show: Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. 2023 signals the dawn of a new age in Cheesehead country, as Jordan Love makes his official debut as Green Bay’s full-fledged starting QB.
Love is only credited for one NFL start in his 10 appearances as a pro in relatively limited action. Although the 24-year-old out of Utah State doesn’t have the most impressive body of work as the former backup to the aforementioned Rodgers, he did look crisp during the preseason to give the Packers faithful some hope. After all, Favre and Rodgers didn’t yield immediate success in their respective first years as starters, either.
That being said, the Packers offense will still feel a lot different and may be in for a rough start, especially with wide receiver Allen Lazard also joining A-Rod in New York. They do have a viable one-two punch out of the backfield with the running back tandem of Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon, and second-year receiver Christian Watson did have his moments to shine in his rookie campaign last year. All things considered, head coach Matt LaFleur will keep Green Bay competent, albeit without the high upside that Rodgers once provided on his own.
Why Bet on the Chicago Bears?
Despite finishing with the worst record in the league last season, there’s plenty of optimism entering the 2023 campaign for the Chicago Bears, who are still all-in with the continued development of young play-caller Justin Fields.
Chicago traded its first-overall pick from this year’s draft for even more draft capital and trade negotiation pieces. As such, the team was able to acquire several big names in free agency such as wide receiver D.J. Moore, former Green Bay tight end Robert Tonyan, and linebackers T.J. Edwards and Tremaine Edmunds.
Nonetheless, the Bears’ success this season will almost entirely hinge on Fields, who became just the third quarterback in NFL history to run for over 1,000 rushing yards in a single season with eight rushing touchdowns and a dazzling 7.1 yards-per-carry average. Together with a supposedly improved defense, Chicago has all the makings for being a sleeper playoff candidate in Fields’ pivotal third year in the league.
Packers vs. Bears Betting Trends
- The Packers went 3-5 on the road last season (4-4 ATS).
- Green Bay has won eight straight meetings against Chicago (SU/ATS).
- The totals went under in three of Green Bay’s last four games in general.
- The Bears went 2-7 at home in 2022 (3-5-1 ATS), losing seven of them in succession to close the season.
- Chicago is winless in their last nine outings against division rivals (1-8 ATS).
- The totals went over in four of Chicago’s last six homestands.
Packers vs. Bears Expert Betting Predictions
It’s strange seeing the Packers be pegged as underdogs in their Week 1 clash against the Bears, whom Rodgers had terrorized for nearly two decades. However, we’ll have to side with the odds and the favored Bears in this contest, as Green Bay’s drop in talent since Rodgers’ departure cannot be ignored. Chicago’s odds as a favorite are also short enough to confidently claim that the team will manage to cover the spread even if they win by just a single field goal.
