UFC 277 Main Card Preview

Magomed Ankalaev vs. Anthony Smith

Based on odds, Ankalaev versus Smith is the main card’s most lopsided fight. The chalk is 17-1 and hasn’t lost since 2018 when Paul Craig submitted Magomed in the third round at a UFC Fight Night headlined by Fabricio Werdum and Alexander Volkov.

Smith is 36-16. The underdog in this has won 3 straight. So Anthony deserves a shot in a main card bout. But he shouldn’t last long versus the excellent Ankalaev.

UFC 277 Pick: Magomed Ankalaev

Alexandre Pantoja vs. Alex Perez

Underdog Alex Perez is 24-6. Going back to 2018, Perez has won 3-of-5. He last fought on Nov. 21, 2020, losing to Deiveson Figueiredo in a flyweight championship bout.

The layoff won’t do Perez any favors in this. Alexandre Pantoja is 24-5. The chalk has a 2 inches reach advantage and won two fights in 2021. Also, Pantoja is 8-0 via KO or TKO and 9-0 via submission, which means Alexandre has only lost via decision.

UFC 277 Pick: Alexandre Pantoja

Derrick Lewis +105 vs. Sergei Pavlovich -125

Lewis versus Pavlovich should be one of the most competitive and exciting fights on the UFC 277 card. Lewis, the slight underdog, has lost 2-of-3. But before knocking Derrick for the losses, it’s important to note that 1 loss was a championship bout versus Ciryl Gane.

Sergei Pavlovich is 15-1 and 12-1 via knockout or technical knockout. The favorite in this contest has a 5-inch reach advantage. Pavlovich has won 3 straight and 4-of-5. The lone loss happened versus Alistair Overeem in 2018. Sergei gets the win.

UFC 277 Pick: Sergei Pavlovich

Brandon Moreno vs. Kai Kara-France // Flyweight Title Fight

Brandon Moreno has a 3-inch height advantage and an inch reach advantage. This is a step down for the chalk because he’s fought his last three bouts against the excellent Deiveson Figueiredo. Although Kara-France is an excellent mixed-martial-artists, he should have a tough time in this. The 24-9 underdog is on a 3-match winning streak, but none of the wins happened versus a fighter close to Moreno’s level. The chalk takes this.

UFC 277 Pick: Brandon Moreno

Julianna Pena vs. Amanda Nunes // Women’s Bantamweight Title Fight

Nunes should regain her belt, but it’s difficult to understand how she lost it in the first place. Most regarded Amanda as one of the best pound-for-pound MMA fighters in the world. Pena submitted Nunes in the second round in the first bout. In the rematch, Nunes should turn the tables, but there is a problem.

The odds don’t justify a bet on the favorite to regain her belt. Not only that, but Julianna knows how to beat Pena. There’s nothing that says she can’t do it again. Give the underdog champion a look.

UFC 277 Pick: Julianna Pena
