Philadelphia Phillies Advance to 2022 World Series

And yet here we are with the Phillies having overcome the odds and are back in the Fall Classic for the first time since 2009. Third Wheel Gone Wild

The NL Central had three representatives in the 2022 MLB Postseason and Philadelphia was regarded as the odd one out of the bunch which included two 101-win ballclubs in the Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets.

Whereas the Mets failed to escape their NL Wild Card Series against the San Diego Padres (more on them later), the Phillies spoiled the final seasons of Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, and Adam Wainwright as they swept the St. Louis Cardinals in two games. Starting pitcher Aaron Nola overcame his playoff struggles and pitched 6.2 scoreless innings in the series-clinching Game 2 and would go on to have more fantastic starts in the near future. Nola’s 18 strikeouts are currently tied for the second-most by any pitcher this postseason.

Dethroning the Reigning WS Champs

Save for a shutout loss in Game 2, the National League Divisional Series between the Phillies and the Braves was all about the former. Philly scored no less than seven runs in each of their three wins in the NLDS over its division rivals, including a combined 17-4 run deficit in the final two games of the series.

During the regular season, Atlanta only trailed the Los Angeles Dodgers for the most runs scored in the NL. However, the Braves’ bats were constantly checked by Philadelphia’s pitching staff; one that has a solid 3.07 ERA as a team and the second-most strikeouts by any playoff team thus far (95).

Even More Blessed in the NLCS

In a collision course between two amazing Cinderella runs, the Phillies were matchup up with another surprising National League Championship Series contender in the San Diego Padres, who had a similarly shocking upset of the Dodgers in the NLDS.

Philadelphia mirrored its NLCS performance by winning Game 1 and losing Game 2 against San Diego. That’s when two-time NL MVP Bryce Harper decided to go on a tear and prove to be the best player in this year’s playoffs. Harper is hitting .410 with 2022 MLB Postseason highs of 16 hits, nine RBIs, and four home runs. His go-ahead two-run blast in the bottom of the eighth inning in Game 5 against the Padres will forever be etched into Philly’s postseason lore, whilst the feisty Friars from SoCal had their prayers for a trip to the World Series left unanswered.

The Phillies are now set for a World Series showdown against the American League’s Houston Astros. Houston swept both of its playoff opponents in the Seattle Mariners and the New York Yankees, which means the Phillies will once again be the underdog in a postseason battle for the ages. Philly seeks to winits third-ever World Series title and the team’s first since 2008.
