Phillies vs. Braves 2022 NLDS Series Odds and Preview

By Jeff Stinger

The Philadelphia Phillies broke many baseball fans’ hearts by sending a St. Louis Cardinals team filled with retirement-bound stars packing from the postseason. Now comes an NLDS affair with fellow division rivals the Atlanta Braves, who arguably had the best mid-season push this season to secure a first-round bye in the playoffs. Will the Phillies continue their shocking postseason run, or will the Braves return to the NLCS and keep their title defense alive?

Nitrobetting is ready to lend a hand to its bettors with their winning bets to be shot out of the park. This time, let’s take a closer look at the upcoming National League Divisional Series showdown between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves.

What to Know About the Philadelphia Phillies

  • Odds to Win 2022 NLDS Series: +170

Proving their doubters wrong, the Philadelphia Phillies stunned the National League’s playoff brackets when they swept the NL Central champions the St. Louis Cardinals in two games during the wild-card round this past weekend. This is Philadelphia’s first trip to the postseason since 2011 and the team suddenly became a compelling dark horse pick to go the distance.

Led by former two-time NL MVP and franchise cornerstone Bryce Harper, the Phillies have a ton of firepower at hand. Harper, along with Kyle Schwarber, Rhys Hoskins, and Nick Castellanos, turned Philly into an offensive force that ranked sixth in the majors in home runs, seventh in runs scored, and eighth in team batting average.

However, the Phillies’ questionable bullpen may result in their downfall against the Braves. Although Aaron Nola pitched a shutout win during Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series against the Cards, it was his first-career playoff start and he won’t be ready for the NLDS until later into the series. Philadelphia had a team ERA of nearly four runs on average, which will simply not do against an offensive juggernaut like Atlanta.

What to Know About the Houston Astros

  • Odds to Win 2022 NLDS Series: -200

It took a while before the Atlanta Braves got it going during the 2022 regular season, but the reigning World Series champions flipped the switch just in time mid-season to finish with their first 100-win campaign in nearly two decades. They’ve made it as far as the NLCS in each of the last two seasons and, thanks to a relatively favorable matchup against a familiar divisional opponent, are projected to make it a three-peat into the National League Championship Series.

Atlanta’s offense remains top-notch, averaging barely five runs per contest and ranking third in the majors in that department. They also finished with the second-most home runs in MLB this season, thanks to a pair of 30-homer campaigns from top sluggers Austin Riley and Matt Olsen; not to mention three other players with 20 or more longballs this season.

A 3.46 team ERA is also good enough for fifth overall in the big leagues, giving the Braves the complete package to support their quest for back-to-back World Series wins. All eyes will be on leading NL Rookie of the Year candidate Spencer Strider; a promising southpaw that finished his maiden MLB season with an 11-5 record and a glowing 2.67 ERA. Veteran closer Kenley Jansen is also still at the top of his game, as his 41 saves were one short of tying the MLB’s best mark this season.

Phillies vs. Braves Betting Trends

  • The Phillies are 6-3 in the last nine games in general.
  • The totals went over in five of Philly’s last eight outings.
  • The Braves are 13-1 in the last 14 home games.
  • The Braves went 11-8 against Philadelphia this season.
  • The totals went under in six of the last eight games played in Atlanta.

Phillies vs. Braves 2022 NLDS Series Expert Betting Predictions

The Braves should get the ball rolling with an early victory at home where they’ve been quite unbeatable of late. However, we’re inclined to believe that the Phillies will make this an intriguing series despite the odds being stacked against them. Philadelphia can match Atlanta’s offensive at the plate and will likely get a gem of a winning start in one of the team’s home games to pick up at least one inspiring victory before flaming out in either Game 4 or Game 5 of the series.
