Why bet on the Philadelphia Phillies?
With the home-field advantage throughout the NL Wild Card series against the Miami Marlins, the Philadelphia Phillies’ postseason experience from last season came up huge once more to set up the NLDS rematch against the Braves. Across the two-game sweep, Philadelphia outscored Miami, 11-2, with their top aces Zach Wheeler and Aaron Nola putting on clinical starts.
The Phillies would have to wait a bit longer for either Wheeler or Nola to be ready for their next start in the series against Atlanta. That leaves the starting pitching duties to Ranger Suarez (4-6, 4.187 ERA) for Saturday’s series opener. Suarez has been shaky over his past couple of starts despite racking up 10 strikeouts, allowing 14 hits and 10 runs across 11.1 innings of work.
On a positive note, Philly’s offense has picked up over the last three games, scoring a total of 20 runs during this stretch. The Phils ranked eighth in the majors during the regular season in runs scored and fifth in slugging percentage, which should worry a Braves pitching staff that’s allowed an average of six runs per contest over its last three outings.
Why bet on the Atlanta Braves?
As the highest-scoring team that the MLB has seen in the regular season, the Atlanta Braves are seen as one of the front-runners to win this year’s World Series. They won the NL East for the sixth straight season and topped all of their previous marks with a glowing 104-win campaign this year.
Atlanta leads the majors in just about every offensive category; batting average, runs scored, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage just to name a few. The Braves are the first team in MLB history to have five different players hit 30 or more home runs apiece in a single season (Ronald Acuna Jr., Matt Olson, Austin Riley, Marcell Ozuna, and Ozzie Albies), and each of their starters also has at least 17 homers this regular season.
With ample time to prepare for the series, the Braves will have its top ace Spencer Strider (20-5, 3.86 ERA) take the mound in Game 1 on Saturday. Strider has picked up winning decisions in each of his last four starts to end the regular season but has been tagged for at least three runs in three of his most recent outings.
Phillies vs. Braves Betting Trends
- Philadelphia is 4-3 in the last seven road games.
- The Phillies are 8-2 in its last 10 games against divisional opponents.
- The run totals went over in four of Philly’s last five games on the road.
- Atlanta is 4-2 in the last six home games.
- The Braves went 8-5 against the Phillies this season.
- The run totals went over in five of the last seven Braves-Phillies matchups.
Phillies vs. Braves 2023 MLB Wild Card Game 1 Betting Prediction
One wouldn’t be at fault for betting on the Phillies to take Saturday’s series opener given how impressive their sweep of the Marlins was in the Wild Card. However, Atlanta’s had more time to prepare and will come out swinging with its potent bats. The Braves should prevail with the win that’s backed by a strong starting effort from Strider.
