The San Antonio Spurs have missed the playoffs in three straight seasons, which is now becoming the norm for the once-dominant franchise. PF Jeremy Sochan – Baylor
San Antonio’s calling card has always been its defense, and Baylor’s Jeremy Sochan certainly fits the team’s bill as a terrific defender against all positions. And while the 19-year-old power forward doesn’t have the best offensive game, his precise passing skills more than make up for his offensive awareness that he’ll quickly develop with more time in the pros. Sochan won the Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year award, but he could definitely be a starter for the Spurs with their dire need for a starting PF.
F Tari Eason – LSU
Another defensive savant in this year’s draft class is Tari Eason out of LSU, who averaged two steals per contest in his lone stint at LSU. Like Sochan, Eason won the Sixth Man of the Year award over in the SEC as a shut-down defender with better offensive chops (16.9 PPG, 52.1 FG%, 80.3 FT%). However, at 21 years of age, Eason does lack the developmental window that Sochan has being two years younger than his fellow rookie prospect.
PF Nikola Jovic – Serbia
The Spurs could certainly go in a different direction at the position by drafting offensive whiz Nikola Jovic instead. The Leicester native is all about offense, as his three-point shooting skill for a man of his size (6-foot-10) is quite the commodity in the three-happy era of the NBA. Jovic won countless awards in the ABA juniors, including two league titles in as many seasons played and one MVP award. These accolades could be what’s in store for the young Serb who is one letter shy of having the same name as another international wonder and reigning NBA MVP, Nikola Jokic.
