Why Bet on the Texas A&M Aggies?
This is the conference opener for both A&M and Arkansas and the SEC West is incredibly deep again with the No. 1 Tide, No. 13 Ole Miss and No. 23 Auburn. LSU was ranked in the preseason but has fallen out of the Top 25 for now.
Texas A&M lost starting QB Haynes King to injury in its second game, an escape at Colorado, and started Zach Calzada last week in a 34-0 win over New Mexico. The sophomore completed 19-of-33 passes for 275 yards and three TDs. The Aggies have one of the best running backs in the SEC in junior Isaiah Spiller, who had the 12th 100-yard game of his career, tallying 117 yards on 15 carries, including a 5-yard touchdown run, the 20th TD rush of his career.
It was Texas A&M’s first shutout since a 67-0 blanking of Prairie View A&M on Sept. 10, 2016. The 122 yards allowed were the Aggies’ fewest since 2001 against TCU. The team’s 17 points allowed thus far are the school’s second-fewest to start the year since the 1997 season when A&M gave up 16 points through three games.
Finally, Jimbo Fisher’s club AM is the only team in FBS allowing less than 100 passing yards per game and is one of six teams that haven’t allowed a passing touchdown in 2021. &M is allowing just 3.0 yards per opponent pass attempt and has limited opponent passers to a 62.16 passer rating, which both lead FBS.
Believe it or not, this is the first time A&M is 3-0 under Fisher and its 11-game winning streak overall is tied for the second-longest in the country (Oklahoma) and school’s longest since 12 in a row in 1992.
Why Bet on the Arkansas Razorbacks?
Arkansas (3-0) already holds a win over a ranked Texas school, knocking off No. 15 Texas on Sept. 11. The Razorbacks had little trouble last week in a 45-10 win over Georgia Southern. Hogs QB KJ Jefferson was 13-for-23 passing for a career-high 366 yards and career-best three TD passes. It was the first time a Razorback QB threw for at least 360 yards since Austin Allen (400) did so against Alabama in 2016. Jefferson became only the fifth FBS QB since 2000 to throw for at least 365 yards on 13 or fewer completions. The No. 16 ranking is the Hogs’ highest since October 2016.
Arkansas finished with 633 yards of total offense to rank eighth on the school’s single-game list. The Hogs have recorded 200 or more rushing yards in the season’s first three games for the first time since 2013. They are 3-0 for the first time since 2016 and have scored 38 or more points in each of the season’s first three games for the first time since 2011. Defensive back Jalen Catalon, recognized as a preseason All-American by the Associated Press, is the only FBS player in the nation to post double-digit tackles and record two interceptions in a game this season.
A&M and Arkansas usually play each year at the neutral site outside Dallas – Cowboys owner Jerry Jones played for Arkansas way back when. This is called the Southwest Classic because both used to be in the Southwest Conference.
The Aggies are 9-0 vs. Arkansas since joining the SEC. Texas A&M has won its last six neutral site contests at four different venues dating back to the 2017 season. The Hogs still lead the all-time series 41-33-3. They are technically the home team this year.
