Will Tiger Woods play in the 2022 U.S. Open?

By Carlos Chacon

Tiger Woods, a dominant fixture in the history of golf, shocked the entire world with his return to the sport. His career wasn’t exactly as smooth sailing as one would expect from a heavy hitter like himself. Woods faced numerous challenges along the way, including personal and professional controversies. Nevertheless, he bounced back strong and returned to the list of elite golf players of the generation.

Woods suffered a near-fatal car accident in February 2021. The 46-year-old made only two major tournament appearances since the crash, but it was enough to get him a spot at the 2022 PGA Championship. He had impending pain in his surgically repaired right leg which was evident to viewers in his last appearance, which led to his decision to sit out significant events. It was his first withdrawal from a major since the 1995 US Open–his second career major.

With that, Tiger Woods’ ongoing injury matters leave his 2020 US Open status a huge question mark. Nitrobetting goes over the latest on whether the golf icon takes part in the tournament at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Recent announcements from Woods reiterated his decision not to participate in the 2022 US Open. His recent injury is a huge part of this decision and his plans to play in the PGA Championship.

“I previously informed the USGA that I will not be competing in the @usopengolf as my body needs more time to get stronger for major championship golf,” Woods wrote in a tweet. “I do hope and plan to be ready to play in Ireland at @JPProAm and at @TheOpen next month. I’m excited to get back out there soon!”

The three-time US Open winner submitted an entry for the tournament before the April deadline. But despite the entry, Woods did say that this did not mean he would necessarily participate. Tiger said he plans to join the JP McManus Pro-Am and the British Open next month to go with his plans to only play in big events.

Tiger Woods US Open Achievements

Three of Tiger’s 15 major championship victories have come at the US Open, two of which are considered the best in the sport. The 2002 win came by way of three strokes at Bethpage Black to beat Phil Mickelson. That year, he became the first player in three decades to win The Masters and US Open in the same year, the last one being Jack Nicklaus in 1972.

His most recent US Open win was in 2008 at Torrey Pines. What makes this one of his greatest performances was the fact that he won the competition with a broken leg. Shortly after a strong finish at The Masters, Tiger underwent a painstaking arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage damage in his left knee. Six weeks after the surgery, it was discovered that he also carried around a pair of stress fractures in his left tibia. However, no one knew about the latter when he played the US Open that year, making this victory one of the best.

Last but not least was his first US Open win in the year 2000, showcasing one of the most dominant performances in a major championship. Tiger was untouchable early into the contest and the first player in the tournament to finish double digits under par, on top of records for the largest lead at a US Open after 36 and 54 holes.
