Top 2023 NFL Fantasy Football Tight End Sleeper Picks

By Jeff Stinger

Every fantasy football season, managers dread the moment when they have to decide on how high or low their priority is at filling out the ever-tricky tight end spot. One could count the number of elite options at tight end with one hand, which means knowing the best dark horse TE prospects on the draft board will be crucial as always once the cream of the crop has been gobbled up in the early rounds.

Nitrobetting is ready to take your bets into the end zone this 2023 NFL season. This time, let’s explore the best sleeper TE options with the highest upside and could be picked up in the middle-to-late rounds of fantasy football re-draft leagues.

Top 5 Fantasy Football TE Sleeper Picks this 2023 NFL Season

Pat Freiermuth (Pittsburgh Steelers)

After one terrific showing in Week 1 of the preseason, quarterback Kenny Pickett gave Pittsburgh plenty of optimism for the regular campaign ahead. Pickett, a +4,900 sleeper to win the MVP award in his second full NFL season, will likely call upon the services of his tight end Pat Freiermuth often. Freiermuth has already warmed up to Steelers fans as the second coming of Heath Miller, and the 24-year-old out of Penn State played 16 games last season with 68 catches and an average of 11.6 yards per reception. That said, “Muth” chants will also be heard loud in fantasy as a borderline top-10 TE option worth reaching for around the fifth or sixth round, especially in PPR leagues.

Dalton Schultz (Houston Texans)

For those in search of high-upside touchdown magnets, Houston’s Dalton Schultz is a mid-tier TE option well worth considering. The 6-foot-5 Stanford product should give rookie quarterback Bryce Young a nice security blanket in the Texans’ passing game, putting up 13 receiving TDs and nearly 1,400 receiving yards over his last two seasons in Dallas. Schultz even ended his final year in a Cowboys uniform with a bang as he hauled in three touchdowns in two playoff games. Playing for a worse team this season does hurt his value, but Schultz will have hardly any competition for looks in the Texans’ offense for him to sustain his fantasy-worthy production in 2023.

Chigoziem Okonkwo (Tennessee Titans)

In line for a solid sophomore campaign in the Music City is Chigoziem Okonkwo, who displayed flashes of brilliance in his rookie year. Okonkwo played in all 17 games (eight starts) with 32 catches for f50 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Those numbers aren’t exactly eye-popping for fantasy standards, but getting handed the reins to the Titans’ starting tight end job is what boosts his value heading into the new season. We’re expecting “Chig” to benefit from a timid Tennessee passing attack that will likely count on the 23-year-old big man to be a stable midfield threat, especially with the team lacking in real threats at wide receiver.

Cole Kmet (Chicago Bears)

As the old adage goes, availability is the best ability. That’s certainly the case for Chicago’s Cole Kmet, who’s played in all 17 games each of the last two years and had many fantasy managers predicted to break loose last season in Justin Fields’ sophomore year. Kmet did relatively deliver on the promise despite a slow start, finishing with seven TD catches, albeit with just 50 catches. The Bears are currently +400 sleepers to win NFC North and it’s Fields’ late-season chemistry with Kmet in 2022 that has us high on the forth-year tight end out of Notre Dame to top his previous touchdown total this upcoming season while also being a fringe top-12 TE in fantasy in the process.

Gerald Everett (L.A. Chargers)

Playing for his third West Coast team in as many years, 29-year-old veteran Gerald Everett proved why he’s a tight end well worth a late flyer in fantasy drafts. Everett set new career highs under the Chargers’ electric offense with 58 catches and 555 receiving yards, and four TD catches. Fantasy managers slept on the former South Alabama standout last year, but he’s now under most people’s radars not just as a solid TE stash in the closing rounds, but as a viable weekly flex start in deeper leagues.
