When Was the Last Time the Toronto Maple Leafs Won the Stanley Cup?
Thanks to a tense victory in Game 5 over the defending champions the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Toronto Maple Leafs are on the cusp of advancing in the postseason for the first time in over half-a-decade. Playoff success has been a rare occurrence for the loyal Toronto fan base, but even more so when it comes to actual title-winning success.
Nitrobetting is ready to dish out some slick assists to get bets into the back of the net. This time, let’s take a quick break from the intense playoff action to find out when was the last time that the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup, as well as Toronto’s latest NHL odds of winning the Stanley Cup title this postseason.
The Last Time the Maple Leafs Won the Stanley Cup
The OG Powerhouse of the Original Six
The Toronto Maple Leafs franchise has been around dating back to 1917, beginning as the Vancouver Millionaires. They were the first-ever team to hoist Lord Stanley’s trophy in the infancy stage of what would eventually become the National Hockey League in 1948.
The team had already relocated to Toronto along with a change in image that we’ve come to know the Maple Leafs to date. Between 1948 and 1967, only six teams comprised of the NHL’s core, and the Leafs won a total of 10 Stanley Cups during this stretch, including the first and last seasons comprising of only the Original Six franchises. Counting the championships won prior to the NHL’s official inception, the Leafs have won a total of 13 Stanley Cup titles.
The Long Drought After
Ever since the NHL expanded to more teams following Toronto’s last championship victory in 1967, the Leafs haven’t won another title since; let alone whiff the Stanley Cup Final stage whatsoever. They came close to reaching the SCF on four separate occasions between 1993 and 2002, posting a combined 5-16 record in the Conference Finals during this span.
What’s even worse for the downtrodden Ontario organization is that the Leafs have had stellar regular-season campaigns since 2016, only to flame out in the very first round in each of their playoff appearances. That’s if you also count their utterly disappointing 3-2 qualifying-round series loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2020.
Toronto Maple Leafs Latest 2022 Stanley Cup Odds Update
As of this writing, the Maple Leafs are slight (+117) underdogs to win Game 6 of their first-round showdown Thursday against the Tampa Bay Lightning (-137). Toronto gained control of the series lead with a narrow 4-3 victory in Game 5 Tuesday and are now just one win away from advancing to the second round of the postseason for the first time since 2004.
However, it’s worth noting that the Leafs have choked away a handful of series leads in recent playoff past. Just last season, the Montreal Canadiens clawed out of a 3-1 series hole to eventually reach the Stanley Cup Final. And in 2019, the Boston Bruins eliminated the Maple Leafs from the playoffs for the second straight season after Toronto squandered a similar 3-2 series lead that the team currently has as we speak.
