Who was the Last Horse to Win the Triple Crown?

By Carlos Chacon

Since the inception of the Kentucky Derby in 1875, there have been a total of 146 runnings of America’s horse-racing Triple Crown races. Only a handful of thoroughbreds have won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes in the same year. However, the last horse to pull off the Triple Crown victory was actually not too long ago.

Nitrobetting is here to bring all the latest odds and updates for the highly-anticipated running of the 2022 Triple Crown races. This time, let’s find out who was the last horse to win the Triple Crown, as well as the latest horse racing odds for the upcoming second leg of the Triple Crown which is the 2022 Preakness Stakes.

The Last Horse to Win the Triple Crown

In 2018, Justify became the 13th winner of the Triple Crown and did so in an impressive fashion. Trained by the legendary Bob Baffert, Justify won the first three races of its career leading up to the 2018 Kentucky Derby before running the table and becoming the first horse to retire with a perfect 6-0-0 record to go along with its Triple Crown achievement.

Baffert was also behind the last Triple Crown winner prior to Justify. American Pharoah won the Triple Crown in 2015 as well as the Breeders’ Cup Classic that same year, becoming the only horse in history to win the Grand Slam of Thoroughbred racing. Baffert is one of only two trainers to win the Triple Crown, with the late James “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons being the other.

Other Notable Triple Crown Winners

The Triple Crown Trophy was not commissioned until the year 1950 but has been awarded to all racehorses of the past who’ve accomplished such a feat. Sir Barton was the first-ever thoroughbred to win the Triple Crown all the way back in 1919, followed by a couple of Fitzsimmons-trained colts in Gallant Fox (1930) and Omaha (1935).

Perhaps the most popular racehorse to win the Triple Crown or even the most popular racehorse in general is Secretariat. The thoroughbred which also went by the name “Big Red” became the first Triple Crown winner in half a century back in 1973 and ninth overall to earn that rare distinction. Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes that year by a record-shattering margin of 31 lengths and it’s this feat that earned the National Museum of Racing Hall-of-Famer a feature-length movie made by Disney in 2010.
