Why bet on the Minnesota Twins?

One of the Twins’ top relievers, Joe Smith (upper trapezius) is traveling with the Twins on this road trip and could be activated during it. The 38-year-old has been dependable in a setup role for the Twins in 2022, collecting a win and 14 holds while supplying a 2.78 ERA and 1.46 WHIP across 22.2 innings. His return will be welcome amid Minnesota’s recent late-inning bullpen woes.

Fellow reliever Trevor Megill (shoulder) struck out one over a scoreless inning Saturday in his rehab appearance for Triple-A St. Paul. Megill could be activated from the 15-day injured list at any time. He’ll likely fill a middle-relief or setup role for Minnesota after turning in a 2.08 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 15:5 K:BB across 13 innings prior to landing on the IL.

First baseman Luis Arraez continues to lead the majors with a .344 average entering this week. He has multiple hits in six of his last 10 games and 30 on the season, which leads baseball. The Twins record for multi-hit games in a season is held by Kirby Puckett, who had 74 in 1989. Arraez is on pace for 60, which would mark the most since 1996, when Paul Molitor had 72 and Chuck Knoblauch had 61.

Chris Archer (2-3, 3.08 ERA) is scheduled on the mound Tuesday. Archer gave up one run in four innings last Thursday in a no-decision against the Guardians. The right-hander had trouble finding the strike zone with six free passes and 45-of-90 pitches balls.

While the club has been vigilant with his pitches and innings (only pitching more than 80 pitches in a start once), he has seen good results with them. In 15 starts, Archer has a 3.08 ERA, which is the lowest in his career. He is also only allowing 6.9 hits per nine innings, which is also the lowest in his career. He made it a point to sign with Minnesota in free agency this past winter.

“I knew a couple of people on the staff,” Archer said. They included manager Rocco Baldelli (who was on Tampa Bay’s coaching staff when Archer was in the majors with them from 2012 through 2018) and pitching analyst Josh Kalk (who also was previously with Tampa Bay while Archer was there as well). “I knew I was in good hands from that standpoint.” Archer has faced the Sox once this year, allowing 2 runs over three innings of a no-decision on April 24.

Why bet on the Chicago White Sox?

Chicago remains without slugging outfielder Eloy Jimenez but he’s getting close to a return. Jimenez hasn’t played for the White Sox since April 23, when he tore a hamstring tendon while running to first base. Initially the White Sox said his window to return would be between six to eight weeks and it has been longer than that. Jimenez is in the middle of his second rehab stint as he works back from the surgery required to fix his hamstring tendon. He was playing with Triple-A Charlotte in early June when he needed to pause his rehab due to what the team called “normal leg soreness.” In 11 games this season Jiménez slashed .222/.256/.333 with one home run and seven RBI.

Fire-balling right-hander Michael Kopech (2-5, 2.78 ERA) is on the mound Tuesday. Kopech yielded four runs (three earned) on five hits over 5 1/3 innings in last Wednesday’s loss to the Angels. The “unearned” run on Kopech’s line came when the pitcher made an error on a Jared Walsh grounder in the first inning. That resulted in the second run in the frame after he earlier gave up an RBI double to Mike Trout. Luis Rengifo would ultimately chase him from the game with a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Kopech struck out six and walked two.

Kopech is working through with soreness in his right knee: “There are adjustments you have to make when you tweak something, but it’s gotten better from start to start. I’m making progress with it.”

Since leaving a start against the Rangers after 13 pitches on June 12, Kopech has allowed 10 earned runs over 16 1⁄3 innings covering three starts. The knee is something he might have to work through the rest of the season.
