UFC 268 Main Card Preview

Justin Gaethje vs. Michael Chandler

Former champion Justin Gaethje hopes to parlay a victory over tough Michael Chandler into a lightweight title fight. Gaethje heads into this after a submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov more than a year ago. Chandler is a decent fighter. He lost his last bout, but that was on May 15. Also, it was a title fight versus Charles Oliveira, who hasn’t lost since 2017. The layoff could affect Gaethje, which means the dog is worth a look.

UFC 268 Pick: Michael Chandler

Shane Burgos vs. Billy Quarantillo

Underdog Billy Quarantillo has a few things going for him. First, he won his last fight, a KO victory over Gabriel Benitez this past July. Second, Quarantillo has won 9-of-10. Finally, the underdog fought 3 times in 2020, which means he kept sharp during the tough days of the pandemic. But although there are a lot of things to like about the underdog, the favorite should be tough to beat. Shane Burgos has lost a couple straight. But he has a 5.5 inches reach advantage in this. Not only that, who Burgos lost too are much, much better fighters than who Quarantillo has beaten. Burgos is the play.

UFC 268 Pick: Shane Burgos

Frankie Edgar vs. Marlon Vera

Ageless Frankie Edgar has lost 3-of-4. The former champion dropped his last match to Corey Sandhagen via TKO/KO in the first-round on the UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Volkov undercard back in February. Marlon Vera last fought in June, beating Davey Grant via unanimous decision. It’s tempting to back Frankie just because he always brings it. But Vera is the younger fighter and Edgar’s age has caught up with him. The chalk wins this.

UFC 268 Pick: Marlon Vera

Rose Namajunas vs. Zhang Weili

On April 4, Namajunas and Weili threw down in what was supposed to be an exciting fight. Rose got the KO victory in the first round, though. It’s interesting that although Namajunas dominated the first bout, Weili shows up as the chalk in the rematch. One of the reasons could be that the former champ lost her first fight since 2013 in the battle against Namajunas. Weili is a top MMA artist. So is Namajunas, but Weili is a slightly better fighter. She should turn the tables on Namajunas and recapture the championship.

UFC 268 Pick: Zhang Weili

Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington

In 2019, Covington gave Usman all he could handle. Colby lasted until the fifth-round. But Usman is one of the greatest fighters to enter the Octagon. So, eventually, Kamaru got to Covington and produced a KO / TKO victory. Has anything changed from 2019 to 2021? Not much other than Kamaru Usman has gotten better and Covington hasn’t fought enough to hang with the champ. Colby’s lone fight since the loss to Usman was against Tyron Woodley, who, it appears, is now a boxer. Usman has beaten Jorge Masvidal twice and Gilbert Burns once. There’s a reason Kamaru is 19-1 and hasn’t lost since his second fight way back in 2013. Usman is one of the best of all time. He dominates Covington.

UFC 268 Pick: Kamaru Usman
