Why Bet on the Golden State Warriors?

Golden State probably should be up 2-0 in this series but blew a 12-point fourth-quarter lead in a Game 1 loss. The Warriors again took a big lead into the fourth quarter of Game 2 on Sunday and never came close to blowing it in a 107-88 victory.

The Warriors had a 52-50 halftime lead before outscoring the Celtics, 35-14, in the third quarter for a 23-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Golden State closed out the third quarter on a 19-2 run capped off by a 39-foot 3-pointer by Jordan Poole. The Warriors maintained a 19-point edge the rest of the game. Golden State’s defense: forced the Celtics into 19 turnovers, leading to 33 points; held the Celtics to 88 points, the fewest points they have scored in this year’s playoffs; and limited Boston to 37.5 percent shooting from the field.

Stephen Curry had 29 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals and across his career in the NBA Finals, Curry is averaging 26.8 points, 6.1 assists and 5.7 rebounds. He’s connected on 12 of 26 shots from three to open the series against Boston thus far. Jordan Poole finished with 17 points off the bench, making five 3-pointers to become the youngest to make that many in an NBA Finals game. Kevon Looney recorded 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins each scored 11 points.

Why Bet on the Boston Celtics?

Jayson Tatum netted 28 points and six rebounds in the loss. Tatum converted just three of his 17 shot attempts in Game 1, but he was back in his bag for Game 2, piling in 21 points on 16 shots through the first half of play. However, the Warriors did a really good job of taking him out of the game over the second half, and he was only able to add another seven points to his total over the final two frames. Jaylen Brown also started hot but finished cold with 17 points. Boston has been outscored by 37 points in the third quarter in these playoffs.

Robert Williams logged just 14 minutes in Sunday’s Game 2 loss, finishing with two points, two rebounds, one assist and two blocks. Marcus Smart crashed into Robert Williams’ surgically-repaired left knee during this game, and Williams went down in a good amount of pain. He’ll play Wednesday.

After Boston’s Al Horford went 6 for 8 from deep in the series opener for Boston, he didn’t even attempt a shot from 3-point range in Game 2. Horford wasn’t alone among his teammates in cooling off, significantly, from 3. Marcus Smart, who went 4 for 7 in the opener, followed it up with a 0 for 3 showing in Game 2. Horford and Smart totaled 44 points in Game 1. They had four in Game 2.

“I feel like we didn’t move it enough on offense at times,” Horford said. “I think that for whatever reason, we got caught playing — going downhill, attacking the basket a little more.”

The Celtics have performed better on the road than at home this postseason, boasting an 8-3 record in hostile territory compared to a 5-4 mark inside TD Garden. But that home record can be improved upon in Game 3 Wednesday night if the team comes out with the right mindset.

“Just playing with a sense of urgency, I think,” Tatum said is the key to becoming more consistent at home. “Human nature plays a part when you go on the road, obviously it’s a tough environment. I feel like recently we’ve kind of relaxed at home. Whether we thought because we had home-court advantage, we came out a little more relaxed. But just having that sense of urgency, knowing that we’re at home, but that we need to play better at home.”

The Celtics are unbeaten after a loss in this postseason.
