Where Will Davante Adams Play in 2022? 3 Things to Know About the Wide Receiver’s Offseason

3 Things to Know About Packers WR Davante Adams’ 2022 Offseason

Hand-in-Hand With the A-Rod Situation

A huge part of Davante Adams’ decision to leave or stay in Green Bay hinges on the status of fellow superstar Aaron Rodgers remaining with the Packers organization as well. As we’d recall, Rodgers expressed his frustrations with the team’s front office the previous offseason only to win another MVP award and have the Packers finish with the best regular-season record in the NFC.

However, Green Bay came up short of winning the Lombardi Trophy yet again with a quick Divisional Round exit against the San Francisco 49ers, further emphasizing Rodgers’ distress of not winning a Super Bowl due to a faulty special teams unit this time around. Unfortunately, the Packers are $28 million under the cap entering 2022, which means retaining the services of Rodgers and Adams will be a tall order; not to mention other key free agents on the defensive end of the team such as De’Vondre Campbell, Kevin King, and Rasul Douglas.

Wanna Play Tag?

Green Bay’s best line of action in keeping Adams around will be to give the five-time Pro Bowl selection the franchise tag, which is estimated to be around $20 million for one season. Adams earned a little over $12 million in the final year of his current four-year contract, so the quick money is certainly appealing for the 29-year-old product out of Fresno State.

However, the Packers’ dire salary cap situation does pose a problem even if Adams stays for one more season in Green Bay with the franchise tag and if Rodgers also takes a pay cut of sorts to keep the team’s financial situation more manageable this offseason. The team was all-in the previous season already and still failed to win the league title despite arguably having the best roster over the past half-decade or so, crippling Green Bay’s maneuverability in the free market and not having much assets in the form of draft picks, either.

Plenty of Suitors for Davante

With three seasons of 1,300-plus receiving-yard campaigns over the last four years and a total of 47 receiving touchdowns during this stretch, Adams is without a doubt the most coveted offensive weapon in free agency this year. That being said, plenty of aspiring teams looking to get a huge boost in the passing game are lining up for the two-time First-team All-Pro’s services.

Several teams from the AFC, namely the Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Miami Dolphins, have sufficient resources to offer Adams a hefty contract. Amongst those five teams, Los Angeles is the most appealing destination due to a couple of factors: rising quarterback Justin Herbert and a possible return to his home state of California.
