Why bet on the Chicago White Sox?

The White Sox lead the all-time series vs. the Dodgers, 15-13, going 8-6 at home and 7-7 at Dodger Stadium. Los Angeles won two of three games last season in Chicago and swept two games in 2017 in the last series at Dodger Stadium. The White Sox are 259-239 all-time in interleague play. The Sox are 6-9 this season after going 11-9 in 2022 and 14-6 in 2021.

Chicago is one of the AL’s big disappointments at 29-38 and enters on a two-game skid. Kendall Graveman took a blown save and a loss after allowing three runs — two earned — in the ninth Sunday against the Marlins. Graveman had gone 16 straight appearances without allowing a run, but his streak came to an end quickly today, as the formerly homerless Jean Segura took him deep to start the ninth. He was charged with two more runs afterwards. The Sox had won six of eight before they blew a 5-1 lead in the rubber game of the weekend set against the Marlins.

Graveman was given the save chance because All-Star closer Liam Hendriks was placed on the 15-day injured list before Sunday’s loss. Hendriks is dealing with elbow inflammation after he missed the start of the season while he recovered from non-Hodgkin lymphoma. GM Rick Hahn said Hendriks’ elbow discomfort is currently presenting in the same way as an issue the pitcher had last season, when he was placed on the IL on June 14 with a strained right forearm flexor and then reinstated on July 4.

Slugger Eloy Jimenez is dealing with a leg injury and may not be ready by Tuesday, although the team hopes he avoids the injured list yet again. When he does play, he’s a vital part of the Sox lineup. He’s hitting .257 this year with six homers and 24 RBI in 136 at-bats.

It’s struggling Lance Lynn (4-6) on the mound Tuesday. Lynn allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out four batters over five innings in the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Yankees. He did not factor in the decision. Half of the eight hits Lynn allowed in the outing went for extra bases, including a fourth-inning homer off the bat of Willie Calhoun.

It was the fifth time in 13 starts the right-hander has given up at least five runs, which has resulted in an unsightly 6.72 ERA. Lynn had appeared to be putting things together during a three-start stretch between May 16 and May 26 during which he went 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 19 innings, but he’s since regressed by allowing 13 runs over nine frames in his past two outings.

Lynn is 3-2 with a 3.80 ERA (19 ER/45.0 IP), .247 (42-170) opponents average, 17 walks and 53 strikeouts in eight career starts against the Dodgers. He is 2-1 with a 3.82 ERA (14 ER/33.0 IP) in six career starts at Dodger Stadium.

Why bet on the Los Angeles Dodgers?

The Dodgers finished a six-game road trip at 2-4 following a 7-3 loss in Philadelphia on Sunday. The Dodgers used eight pitchers in a bullpen game that was necessitated because left-hander Julio Urías remained sidelined with a left hamstring strain. The Dodgers had targeted Sunday’s game for the return of Urías, who last pitched on May 18. But Urias didn’t feel comfortable following his last bullpen session.

Tony Gonsolin (3-1, 2.21 ERA) takes the mound here. Gonsolin did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Reds, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out five over five innings. The Reds got to Gonsolin for three runs in the first on three singles, a walk and a hit batsman. Gonsolin settled in thereafter, pitching three scoreless innings before the Reds tacked on an additional run in the fifth on a throwing error. He departed with a four-run lead, which wound up being blown by the Dodgers’ bullpen.

The 29-year-old has a 2.21 ERA and 0.98 WHIP across eight starts thus far, though he owns a subpar 30:16 K:BB over 40.2 innings and his 4.48 FIP suggests there’s been some luck on his side. But he has allowed three earned runs or fewer in every start this year. Only a few White Sox batters have ever faced Gonsolin.
