The Breeders’ Cup is the annual World Championship of Thoroughbred Horse Racing and is run at different locations each year. The 2022 version will take place at Keeneland Race Course in Central Kentucky, Lexington.

The Breeders’ Cup World Championships is an annual series of Grade I Thoroughbred horse races, operated by Breeders’ Cup Limited, a company formed in 1982. From its inception in 1984 through 2006, it was a single-day event; starting in 2007, it expanded to two days. All sites have been in the United States, except in 1996, when the races were at the Woodbine Racetrack in Canada.
A horse can qualify for the races in two ways. First, they can pay the fees and nominate the horse for the race; or they can qualify through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series. These races are “Win, and you’re in” races that guarantee the winners not only a spot in the gate, but also $40,000 in travel expenses.
