Pimlico Race Course, often known as “Old Hilltop,” hosts the Preakness Stakes, the second jewel of the Triple Crown. The 13⁄16 mile race is held on the third Saturday of May, two weeks after the Kentucky Derby.

Located at 5201 Park Heights Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland, Pimlico was built on 70 acres and was established in 1870. This is the country’s second-oldest racecourse, after Saratoga, which opened in upstate New York in 1864. The name “Pimlico” was given to the place by English settlers in Colonial times because the colonists were from a town near London and remembered a famous landmark called “Olde Ben Pimlico’s Tavern.”
