Pimlico Race Course, often known as “Old Hilltop,” hosts the Preakness Stakes, the second jewel of the Triple Crown. The 13⁄16 mile race is held on the third Saturday of May, two weeks after the Kentucky Derby.
Located at 5201 Park Heights Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland, Pimlico was built on 70 acres and was established in 1870. This is the country’s second-oldest racecourse, after Saratoga, which opened in upstate New York in 1864. The name “Pimlico” was given to the place by English settlers in Colonial times because the colonists were from a town near London and remembered a famous landmark called “Olde Ben Pimlico’s Tavern.”
In 2023, Pimlico is scheduled to hold live race days. Pimlico, however, is open year-round for simulcast racing.
Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore will run nine stakes races on May 20, the day of the Preakness Stakes, and hold another six stakes, including the Black-Eyed Susan, on the day prior. Pimlico, however, is open year-round for simulcast racing.
Pimlico today greets racegoers arriving by automobile, limousine, and even helicopter with the same warmth as those who came over 130 years ago when “Old Hilltop” was only accessible by horse-drawn carriage. Throughout its long history, the racecourse has been honored by the adjournment of the United States House of Representatives for the first and only time in history in 1877 to see a race between Parole, Ten Broeck, and Tom Ochiltree. The race became known as “The Great Race,” and a replica of its finish is now a Pimlico hallmark, decorating the clubhouse as a statement to all who visit that Pimlico is a place where legends live on forever.
