2022 PGA American Express Recap

Hudson Swafford didn’t start out well. The eventual winner shot a 70 in the first round but after the first, Swafford got it going with a 65, 66, 64. At the end, Swafford finished at -23, 2 strokes ahead of Tom Hoge in second.

Third place was a 3-way shake among Brian Harmon, Lanto Griffin, and Lee Hodges all at -20. Three players also finished at -19 and in sixth place: Will Zalatoris, Denny McCarthy, and Francesco Molinari. Patrick Cantlay, one of this year’s favorites, finished in ninth at -19.

The American Express 2023 Top Pick

The 2022 PGA Player of the Year has yet to win a tournament, but he’s been playing well enough that it’s only a matter of time.

Scottie finished third at the World Wide Technology in early Nov and ninth at the Cadence Bank Houston Open in mid-Nov. Then in Dec, he finished second at the Hero World Challenge.

Scheffler finished a tied seventh at the Sentry Championship a couple of weeks ago. Scheffler shot a -12 in this last year. The score is good enough to put the 2022 POY on top.

The American Express 2023 Second Pick

Rahm, no doubt, can win. The problem isn’t that we must accept chalk odds. The issue is that Jon won his last tournament played, the Sentry Championship.

The favorite, like most golfers on the Tour, don’t often win tournaments they play back-to-back. So Rahm has that going against him. Jon did shoot a -14 in La Quinta last year. So he should finish close to the leaders on Sunday, which means if you believe Rahm can win two in a row, he’s worth a look.

The American Express 2023 Third Pick

Tony Finau finished a tied fortieth in this last year. Fortieith place doesn’t sound great, but Finau shot a -10, which is a decent score.

Tony should improve off last year’s finish. Finau won the Cadence Bank Houston Open. Our third choice then finished seventh at both the Hero World Challenge and the Sentry Tournament of Champions.Finau must improve big time to have a shot. If you believe he does, the odds make Tony more than playable.

The American Express 2023 Underdog Pick

Zalatoris finished just 4 strokes off the winner in the 2022 event. Will has played in a single tournament this season, finishing eleventh at the Sentry Championship.

The main reason why Zalatoris has played a single PGA tournament is because he suffered an injury late last season. It’s taken Will time to get back his best swing.

We must assume Will is confident he can compete. Confidence is a big factor on the PGA. Zalatoris is the best underdog play on the board.
