2023 Monaco Grand Prix Sleeper Picks

By Jeff Stinger

Last weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was postponed amid heavy flooding affecting the track and surrounding areas. Three consecutive race weekends are cut to two races, with the first one now happening in Monaco. The grid returns to this part of the world for another brawl around the tight turns of Circuit de Monaco. It may not be as action-packed in the calendar, but there’s no denying that the sight of modern Formula 1 cars taking on the narrow streets is a sight to behold.

Red Bull star Max Verstappen will fight hard around the street circuit after teammate Sergio Perez denied him a second victory last year. At the other end of the spectrum, the unpredictable circumstances in qualifying and race day itself make for great racing. Nitrobetting covers the top 2023 Monaco Grand Prix sleeper picks for motorsport fans and bettors.

Esteban Ocon

  • 2023 Monaco Grand Prix Odds: +25,000

The Alpine driver finished P12 in his previous Monaco appearance. He scored points in 2021 and finished ninth following a P11 start. But, he recorded his best finish around the circuit in 2018 when he was the sixth car to cross the line. The French driver holds a few good Monaco race records in his portfolio and is a solid consideration for this weekend’s sleeper picks.

Although it’s been a while since we’ve seen the 26-year-old on the podium, it’s important to consider that Ocon is a Grand Prix winner. The Alpine-Renault wheelman scored his first and only GP win in the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix. He has the racing pedigree and knows he can cross the line ahead of his challengers. The hurdles Ocon needs to overcome include his car. Alpine’s A523 needs a few more tweaks to hang on with the frontrunners. Nevertheless, Ocon’s recent results which feature a pair of points finishes and a P9 finish in Miami could give him the extra push needed to break out of the midfield pack.

Valtteri Bottas

  • 2023 Monaco Grand Prix Odds: +50,000

The former Mercedes driver is an established driver in the sport. He played a pivotal role in Lewis Hamilton’s success and opened a new chapter in his career with Alfa Romeo in 2022. His F1 career includes ten Grand Prix victories, 29 P2 finishes, and 28 P3 finishes. Although the 33-year-old is yet to prove his talent behind the C43, his potential is enough to rank him with this weekend’s top sleeper picks. Bottas delivered quality results since joining esteemed motorsport.

Valtteri finished P9 in last year’s Monaco Grand Prix. Before moving to Alfa Romeo, he enjoyed solid points finishes around the street circuit. We also witnessed the 33-year-old share the podium with Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, with the Finnish driver taking P3 in the 2019 Monaco GP. This season, Bottas ranks 13th in the Drivers’ Championship race with four points in five races. He holds an average grid position of 13.6 and an average finish of 13.6.

Yuki Tsunoda

  • >2023 Monaco Grand Prix Odds: +50,000

It’s fair to say that the Japanese driver stepped up since Pierre Gasly departed from AlphaTauri. He partnered up with Formula E champion Nyck de Vries this year and currently outperforms the Dutchman across five races. Last year, Yuki did well enough to secure P11 in qualifying. Although he finished P17 in the 2022 Monaco GP, there’s work to be done this season. The Japan-born driver holds a pair of top-ten finishes so far this season and looks to improve his previous Monaco record.

Tsunoda holds his season-best finish of P10 this season. This result sits between a few P11s, which puts his average grid position at 13.4 and a 10.6 average finish For all that, if AlphaTaurican work on the right upgrades that complement the slower turns of Monaco, we could see Yuki make his way up front as one of the weekend’s top sleeper picks.
