2021 NFL Preseason Week 3 Preview, Odds and Picks

By Hank Blaine

Just a reminder that the NFL preseason is now three games long (except for the teams in the Hall of Fame Game) and thus the exhibition slate comes to an end this weekend where teams will likely hold out many of their starters to avoid injury. Here’s a look at one interesting matchup per night with the NFL odds.

Top 2021 NFL Week 3 Preseason Games to Bet On

Philadelphia Eagles at New York Jets

  • When: Friday, August 27th, 7:30pm ET
  • Where: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey
  • 2021 NFL Preseason Odds: New York Jets -4

Matchup of first-year coaches in Philadelphia’s Nick Sirianni, who is looking for his first victory, and the New York Jets’ Robert Saleh. The Eagles have looked fairly terrible this preseason and may not have presumed starting quarterback Jalen Hurts again this week. He warmed up before Philly’s eventually 35-0 embarrassment at home vs. New England last Thursday but didn’t play because of a non-COVID illness. Hurts was taken to the hospital after feeling pain in his abdomen but needs all the reps he can get right now.

After spending a couple of days at home resting, Hurts was able to return without missing any practice time so in theory he should play here. The Eagles reportedly are close to cutting 2019 second-round receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside. He has repped with the backups in training camp and dropped his only target of the preseason.

The Jets are 2-0 in the preseason and won in Green Bay 23-14 last Saturday. Rookie quarterback and No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson has looked good so far. Wilson completed 9-of-11 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns against the Packers. However, New York’s defense took a huge hit last week when top pass-rusher Carl Lawson tore his Achilles tendon in practice. His season is over. New York finished 20th in sacks per game last year and Lawson, who was signed to a three-year, $45 million contract this offseason, was expected to be a major factor.

2021 NFL Preseason Week 3 Pick: Jets

Baltimore Ravens at Washington Football Team

  • When: Saturday, August 28th, 6pm ET
  • Where: FedExField, Greater Landover, Maryland
  • 2021 NFL Preseason Odds: Baltimore Ravens -4

Will one of the most unlikely NFL streaks in history end? The Ravens tied the all-time record with their 19th straight preseason win last Saturday, 20-3 over Carolina. Tyler Huntley threw for 187 yards, and Nate McCrary and Ty’Son Williams rushed for touchdowns for the Ravens, who equaled the mark set by Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers, who had a 19-game winning streak in exhibitions from 1959 to 1962.

“I believe everything in life has meaning,” Harbaugh said. “… It’s something only one other team has done, the Vince Lombardi Packers and I think that is notable.” Star QB Lamar Jackson and many starters didn’t even play and may not here.

Washington is 1-1 following a 17-13 win over Cincinnati last Friday. Rookie running back Jaret Patterson, an undrafted free agent from Buffalo, ran for 71 yards, caught three passes for 25 yards and had a 37-yard kickoff return. His 1-yard scoring plunge was Washington’s only touchdown. Washington coach Ron Rivera said that he’s not ready to name a starting quarterback for Week 1 of the regular season yet, though.

2021 NFL Preseason Week 3 Pick: Washington

Oakland Raiders at San Francisco 49ers

  • When: Sunday, August 29th, 4:00pm ET
  • Where: Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, California
  • 2021 NFL Preseason Odds: San Francisco 49ers -3

All eyes in this game will be on the 49ers quarterback battle between Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie Trey Lance, who has certainly closed the gap but it’s still Jimmy G’s job to lose Week 1 of the regular season. In Sunday’s 15-10 win over the Chargers, Lance played six series and finished 8 of 14 for 102 yards, two TDs and an interception.

He settled down during the final three drives, completing seven of his last eight passes for 93 yards, including both TDs. Garoppolo started and played only one series for the Niners. Garoppolo was 3 of 6 for 15 yards and a pick. When asked when he will name his starter, Shanahan said he would whenever he feels like it.

Las Vegas is 2-0 following a 17-16 win over the Rams last Saturday. In an interesting note, the Raiders reportedly contacted the Bears at some point this offseason about trading for Khalil Mack. The details of the Raiders’ trade offer were not disclosed, but the Bears were apparently not interested. The Bears, at the time, were in a tight salary cap position, but decided to restructure Mack’s deal rather than trade him. Of course, the Raiders traded Mack to Chicago a few years ago.
