As of this writing, Mo Donegal is the front-runner to win the 2022 Belmont Stakes. Despite the colt’s fifth-place finish at the Kentucky Derby, it still managed to pick up wins in four of the six prior races along with another pair of third-place finishes.
Mo Donegal also has one factor working in its favor, and that’s the guidance of renowned trainer Todd Pletcher. Pletcher has a total of three Belmont Stakes victories to his name, recently having taken the Run for the Carnations in 2017 with Tapwrit, which also won that year’s Kentucky Derby.
Who Are the Other Top Contenders to Win the 2022 Belmont Stakes?
Right on Mo Donegal’s heels are two thoroughbreds that many fans and experts are high on. The first of which is We The People; a relatively fresh colt trained by up-and-comer Rodolphe Brisset. We The People has won three of its first four races and is entering this week’s event in great shape after not participating in the two grueling Triple Crown races prior to the Belmont Stakes.
The other noteworthy contender is Rich Strike, which is now a household name in the horse racing scene after its amazing win at this year’s Kentucky Derby. The Eric R. Reed-trained colt has two victories and has placed in five of its last seven races as one of the more experienced challengers in the field. Rich Stike is well-positioned to pull off a feat similar to the aforementioned Tapwrit as the winner of the Derby and the Belmont in the same calendar year.
