Each and every year dating all the way back to 1867, the Belmont Stakes have been held in Belmont Park deep in the heart of Nassau County in Elmont, New York.
Not a whole lot has changed to force the Belmont Stakes to take place at a different venue, and the same could be said about the other Triple crown races before it in the Kentucky Derby (Churchill Down in Louisville) and the Preakness Stakes (Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore). In turn, the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing is one of only a few North-American sporting traditions that have stood the test of time without finding the need for relocation to keep the sport alive.
Is the Belmont Stakes Longer than the Kentucky Derby?
Yes, the Belmont Stakes is longer in distance than the famed Kentucky Derby, with the former being 12 furlongs in length (1 ½ miles) and the latter being 10 furlongs (1 ¼ miles). The Preakness Stakes, meanwhile, is the shortest course among the three Triple Crown races, measuring at 9.5 furlongs (1 3⁄16 miles).
Given the enduring length of its course, the Belmont Stakes is often referred to as the “Test of Champions” for how challenging “The Third Jewel of the Triple Crown” truly is. Many previous winners of the Kentucky Derby and/or the Preakness Stakes are often intimidated to complete their Triple Crown journey and have even gone as far as opting out of the race entirely.
