Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Texas Longhorns
- When: Saturday, September 10th, 2022. 12pm EST.
- Where: DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium, Austin, TX
- College Football Odds: Alabama(-20.5) // Texas (+20.5)
This is the biggest Texas has been a home underdog at least this century. The Longhorns rolled UL Monroe in their opener 52-10. Redshirt freshman Quinn Ewers made his first career start for Texas and on 16-of-25 passes for 225 yards with two touchdowns in three quarters of play.
Running back and Heisman Trophy candidate Bijan Robinson led the Longhorns with 73 yards on 10 carries, averaging 7.1 yards per carry. He added three receptions for 40 yards, totaling 103 yards of offense. Robinson has now scored a rushing and receiving touchdown in the same game four times in his career, and has scored a touchdown (rushing or receiving) in 12 of his last 13 games.
Alabama looked very impressive in a 55-0 rout of Utah State, as Young threw five TD passes and rushed for 100 yards and another score. Alabama’s offense got off to a fast start in the opener, scoring on its first nine possessions and all eight possessions with the starters in. The balance of the offense was impressive, with the Crimson Tide passing for 281 yards on 40 attempts while rushing for 278 yards on 32 attempts.
Alabama and Texas will meet for the 10th time in series history. The Longhorns hold the all-time advantage in nine previous meetings at 7-1-1, including a 2-0 mark in Austin. This is Alabama’s first trip to Austin since 1922. Alabama head coach Nick Saban is 1-1 for his career against Texas with a loss at LSU in 2003 and a victory in the most recent meeting between the two programs on Jan. 7, 2010, in Pasadena, Calif. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has never faced Alabama during his nine-year head coaching career. He’s a former Tide offensive coordinator.
Texas will host the top-ranked team in the nation for the third time in program history. The Longhorns are 1-1 in previous home matchups against the No. 1 team in the nation, defeating SMU, 23-20, in 1950 and falling to Ohio State, 24-7, in 2006. The Horns have played the No. 1 team 16 times in program history, sporting a 5-11 record in those games, including a 2-2 mark over the last four games.
2022 College Football Week 2 Pick: Texas ATS (alternate line of +21.5).
Tennessee Vols vs. Pittsburgh Panthers
- When: Saturday, September 10th, 2022. 3:30pm EST.
- Where: Acrisure Stadium, Pittsburgh, PA
- College Football Odds: Tennessee (+6.5) // Pittsburgh (-6.5)
Tennessee and Pitt are facing off for the second time in 39 years following last season’s meeting in Knoxville won 41-34 by Pitt. Deemed the Johnny Majors Classic, Coach Majors led the Panthers to a national championship in 1976, only to return to his alma mater as head coach in 1977. Majors was the head coach of the Vols in the first two matchups between the two schools – in 1980 and then again in 1983.
The Vols had no trouble in their season opener, a 59-10 rout of Ball State. Senior quarterback Hendon Hooker threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two more scores as UT eclipsed the 45-point mark for the fourth straight game. That feat matched a school record set over the final four games of the 1993 season. UT has combined for 209 points and is 3-1 during this streak: (59-10 Ball State, 45-48 Purdue, 45-21 Vanderbilt, 60-14 South Alabama). In 14 games in the Josh Heupel era, the Vols are averaging 40.7 points per game.
Hooker now has thrown touchdown passes in 13 straight games, tying Tony Robinson for second place in Tennessee history. He also moved to 10th in career TD tosses on Rocky Top with 33, passing the 32 of Tee Martin and Bobby Scott.
Pittsburgh beat West Virginia 38-31 in Week 1. M.J. Devonshire returned a tipped pass 56 yards for a touchdown with 2:58 remaining. It marked the Panthers’ third consecutive game with a defensive TD, dating back to last year’s ACC Championship.
Southern California transfer Kedon Slovis threw for 308 yards and a touchdown in his debut with the Panthers in the opener for both teams. Rodney Hammond Jr. ran for 74 yards and two touchdowns before leaving in the fourth quarter.
2022 College Football Week 2 Pick: Pittburgh.
USC Trojans vs. Stanford Cardinal
- When: Saturday, September 10th, 2022. 7:30pm EST.
- Where: Stanford Stadium, Stanford, CA
- College Football Odds: USC (-9.5) // Stanford (-9.5)
This is the Saturday night ABC game. Stanford is USC’s oldest rival, dating back to 1905. The Trojans have won 5 of the last 10 games against the Cardinal dating back to 2013 (the two teams did not meet in 2020 for the first time since 1945). USC has won just 1 of its last 5 meetings on the road at Stanford, dating back to 2010.
Southern Cal started the Coach Lincoln Riley/QB Caleb Williams era with a 66-14 rout of Rice in Week 1. USC’s 66 points scored were its most in a game since winning at Washington State 69-0 on Oct. 18, 2008. The last time USC scored 66 points or more in a home game was when it won 66-19 vs. UCLA on Dec. 3, 2005. The 66 points are the most scored by USC in a home opener since scoring 70 vs. Arkansas on Sept. 17, 2005 (second game of the season). The 52-point margin of victory was USC’s largest in any game since defeating San Jose State by 53 points on Sept. 5, 2009 in the season opener that season (56-3).
Williams completed his first 5 passes and finished the day 19-for-22 for 249 yards and 2 TDs. His 86.3 completion percentage was the best by a Trojan quarterback with a minimum of 20 attempts since Matt Barkley had a 95.0 completion percentage vs. Colorado on Oct. 20, 2012. Williams also led USC in rushing with 68 yards on six carries.
Head coach David Shaw (whose uncle was a USC All-American) saw his Stanford team defeat Colgate 41-10 in its season opener in Week 1. QB Tanner McKee (2021 Pac-12 Honorable Mention) was 22 of 27 for 308 yards passing with 2 TDs.
Prior to Saturday’s win over Colgate, Stanford had played 25 straight games against Power Five opponents and 38 straight against either Power Five or ranked Group of Five foes. Stanford’s 31-point win despite having four turnovers on Saturday marked the first time since Nov. 10, 2012 (Oregon State) that the Cardinal won a game with 4+ turnovers and its first time since Sept. 14, 2002 (San Jose State) to win such a game by more than 30 points.
2022 College Football Week 2 Pick: Stanford.
