Kentucky vs. Ole Miss

  • When: Saturday, October 1st, 2022. 12:00pm EST.
  • Where: Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Oxford, MS
  • College Football Odds: Kentucky (+6.5) // Ole Miss (-6.5)

ESPN has this noon kickoff from the SEC. I suppose it’s possible that it’s an SEC title game preview but I think we all know that will be Georgia and Alabama again.

Kentucky will see the season debut of star running back Chris Rodriguez. He was suspended the first four games for some off-the-field issues. Rodriguez ranks sixth in program history with 2,740 rushing yards and ran for 1,379 yards and nine scores in 2021. He is needed as Kentucky is averaging just 2.4 yards per carry. It has averaged 81.5 rushing yards per game, ranking 123rd in the nation and 13th in the SEC. Kavosiey Smoke, who has filled in as the starter for Rodriguez, has rushed for 277 yards, a touchdown and has averaged 5.2 yards per carry. However, he fumbled twice against Northern Illinois last week, losing one.

“I’m so excited,” QB Will Levis said of Rodriguez’s upcoming return. “He’s been so excited to get back. He’s been getting all the mental reps and he understands the offense on a high level.” Levis is the first UK quarterback with back-to-back 300-yard passing games since Patrick Towles vs. Eastern Kentucky and Auburn in 2015. Levis has accounted for 47 total touchdowns at UK (34 passing and 13 rushing), fifth among Wildcat QBs in that category.

Kentucky is 4-0 for the third time under Coach Mark Stoops, also 2018 and 2021. UK has an eight-game winning streak dating back to the last four games of the 2021 season. It ties for the fifth-longest win streak in school history. Kentucky has allowed 52 points so far this season, fewest in the first four games since 2008 (22 in the first four games).

Dating back to Nov. 14, 2020, the Rebels have won 12 straight home games, the longest winning streak in Oxford since winning 12 straight contests from 1960 to 1964. The streak is sixth amongst Power 5 programs. Ole Miss is one of only four FBS teams (Georgia, Alabama, Minnesota and Ole Miss) averaging 40 or more points and giving up 10 or fewer points per game. The Rebs are off to their first 4-0 start since the 2015 season. Quinshon Judkins (107.2) and Zach Evans (91.2) are one of two pairs of teammates in the country averaging 90-plus yards rushing per game.

Ole Miss and Kentucky will be meeting for the 45th time in a series that dates back to 1944. The Rebels lead the all-time series vs. the Wildcats 28-14-1.

2022 College Football Week 5 Pick: Ole Miss

NC State vs. Clemson

  • When: Saturday, October 1st, 2022. 7:30pm EST.
  • Where: Memorial Stadium, Clemson, SC
  • College Football Odds: NC State (+6.5) // Clemson (-6.5)

ABC has this 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff from the ACC’s Atlantic Division. The winner of this game probably will represent the Atlantic in the conference title game come December. This is the first Top 10 matchup in NC State history.

The Wolfpack will be playing at Clemson for the first time since 2018. When COVID forced the ACC to reschedule the 2020 season and took the Tigers off NC State’s schedule, it marked the first time in 50 years the two teams had not played (1970).

Clemson had won eight straight, and 15 of the last 16, prior to last season’s Wolfpack overtime win in Raleigh. The last time the Wolfpack won in Clemson was in 2002 (the last time the Pack was ranked in the top 10). Three of the last five contests against Clemson have been one-score games and two of the last five (at Clemson in 2016 and last season in Raleigh) have gone into at least one overtime.

NC State has three wins against a top-10 Clemson team all-time (1987, 1988 and 2011). This will mark the first time the teams have faced each other with both ranked in the Top 10 and only the fifth time when both teams were ranked. NC State has faced Clemson twice when both teams are undefeated (both teams were 2-0 in 2013, while NC State was 4-0 and Clemson was 5-0 in 2000). The Wolfpack dropped both of those games.

Clemson enters the contest having won 36 games in a row at Death Valley, dating to a loss to Pitt on Nov. 12, 2016. A 37th consecutive home win on Saturday would tie the ACC record set by Florida State from 1992- 2001, as Miami’s FBS-record 58-game home winning streak from 1985-94 predated the Hurricanes joining the ACC in 2004. Clemson would also tie Florida State and two different Yale runs (1900-03 and 1904-08) for the 11th-longest home winning streak in FBS history.

The Tigers have won 10 straight games overall, the nation’s longest streak, and are averaging 37.7 points in that span. Clemson is attempting to post the eighth winning streak of 11 or more games in program history.

2022 College Football Week 5 Pick: Clemson
