2022 FIFA World Cup Group G Preview

By Carlos Chacon

Group G looks like a repeat of 2018’s Group E with Brazil, Switzerland, and Serbia in the same lot. This means all three teams are familiar with each other’s playing style with the exception of minor lineup changes. Cameroon is the only nation new to the trio, but is likely to offer its opponents a tough time as a value sleeper pick. It’s an interesting pool of nations that could deliver heart-stopping action early into the tournament. Scope out Nitrobetting’s preview for a closer look at each side.

Brazil

  • 2022 FIFA World Cup Odds: -250

Neymar takes center stage for Brazil in his fourth World Cup appearance. He first set foot in the event as an 18-year-old prodigy, with his country’s hopes resting on his shoulders. The former Barca player helped his squad advance to the quarters in 2014 but ended the run with a back injury that ruled him out of the next stage. La Seleçao suffered their most humiliating defeat in the hands of the eventual victors, Germany.

At 30 years of age, we expect Neymar to be surrounded by younger talents. True enough, he now shares the spotlight with upcoming superstar Vinicius Jr. The 21-year-old forward from Real Madrid is on his breakthrough season. His dominant performances helped his club win the 2021-22 LaLiga campaign.

As Group G’s favorites, the Brazilian soccer masters and sixth-year head coach Tite are set to rebound from a heartbreaking quarter-final defeat in 2018.

Switzerland

  • 2022 FIFA World Cup Odds: +450

The Switzerland National team is another source of inspiration for the underdogs. Despite its lack of consistency in qualifying, the side clawed its way to the quarter-finals three times in 12 appearances. In their run to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the A-Team head coach Murat Yakin runs the show. Since joining the national team in 2021, he led the team to an undefeated streak in last year’s 2022 World Cup qualification.

While the team struggled to get past the second round, Switzerland put down impressive numbers at recent World Cups. In their last four appearances, they played 15 matches and lost only three in regulation time. They join the tournament after 11 wins and eight draws in 21 games, with the only two defeats coming at the UEFA EURO 2020 against Italy and this year against England. These numbers are enough to bring the team beyond the event’s group stage.

Serbia

  • 2022 FIFA World Cup Odds: +550

It’s not just Switzerland that looks to spoil the party for Brazil. Serbia has that element of surprise that can produce upset results, one of the biggest being their 2010 victory over Germany. They also finished top of their World Cup qualifying group in South Africa, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portugal national team.

Aleksandar Mitrovic is The Eagles’ amulet. This season, the forward found the back of the net 43 times for Fulham, helping the club reach the top spot in the Championship and a Premier League comeback. Dusan Tadic also plays a pivotal role in this squad. The man for Ajax is currently on top of his game and is a must-watch player.

Cameroon

  • 2022 FIFA World Cup Odds: +1100

Cameroon is one of five African nations in this edition of the World Cup. They bring back core memories of the 1990 World Cup where they stunned the entire world with a victory over soccer icon Diego Maradona and the Argentine team. The then veteran Roger Milla delivered a performance out of the ordinary and helped The Indomitable Lions send off Romania and Colombia for a ticket to the quarter-finals.

Since then, it’s been a disappointing story for Cameroon. They managed only a win in their last 15 fixtures and never made it past the group stages. However, hope springs to life as they eliminate Algeria en route to Qatar. We look forward to interesting narratives coming from the five-time Africa Cup Nations champions. For bettors looking to place wagers on sleepers, Cameroon is Group G’s prime candidate.
