2022 Preakness Stakes Sleeper Picks

By Carlos Chacon

The absence of Rich Strike, this year’s Kentucky Derby winner, means that the door is open for a lot of underrated horses set to participate in the 2022 Preakness Stakes this weekend at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. And just like Rich Strike had proven, there’s plenty of potential for the sleepers in this year’s Run for the Black-Eyed Susans who could very well deliver another Triple Crown upset.

Nitrobetting is here to bring all the latest odds and updates for the highly-anticipated running of the 2022 Preakness Stakes. This time, let’s take a closer look at three sleeper candidates worth keeping tabs on for the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown, as well as each dark horse’s current odds to win Saturday’s race in Baltimore.

Creative Minister

  • 2022 Preakness Stakes Odds: +1200

Despite the lack of experience, early returns have been encouraging for Kenneth McPeek’s Creative Minister, which has placed in each of its first three races. A runner-up finish in its maiden run in March led to back-to-back victories for the upstart colt in each of the following months. McPeek is not stranger to success at Baltimore, either, having won his first Triple Crown Race at the Preakness back in 2020 with Swiss Skydiver.

Armagnac

  • 2022 Preakness Stakes Odds: +1600

The current odds-on favorite to win the 2022 Preakness Stakes is Epicenter at (-125), which was the runner-up in Lexington a couple of weeks ago. That being said, perhaps the one horse in this week’s field who could pose as a direct challenger to Epicenter is Armagnac, which possesses a similar burst in speed as the current odds-on favorite. Armagnac won two races in its last four starts, including its last start in Santa Anita that was won by a 4 ¼-length lead.

Skippylongstocking

  • 2022 Preakness Stakes Odds: +2500

Arguably the most tenured horse at Pimlico this week is Skippylongstocking, which has participated in a total of nine races already since July of last year. The results from the Saffie Joseph-trained thoroughbred have been a mixed bag of sorts with sleeper potential written all over it. The three-year-old colt has two wins and three other podium finishes, albeit with three fourth-place finishes and one outside the top five. For bettors high on experience over momentum, Skippylongstocking is one dark horse pick worth counting on and with a huge return on investment tagged onto it as well.
