2021 PGA ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP Recap

One of this year’s favorites to win the ZOZO took home the trophy in last year’s tournament. Hideki Matsuyama shot a -15 to comfortably beat Cameron Tringale and Brendan Steele, both of whom shot -10.

Third place was a three-way tie at -6 among McKenzie Hughes, Matt Wallace and Sebastian Munoz. Collin Morikawa shot a -5. Xander Schauffele shot even money. Second choice in this year’s tournament, Sung-Jae Kim didn’t play in last year’s event.

2022 ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP Top Pick

At the Tour Championship in August, Hideki Matsuyama played well enough for a tied eleventh. Hideki also played okay in his first tournament this season, the Fortinet Championship. Matsuyama shot a 69-72-75-65 to finish at -7 and tied for twenty-fifth.

No doubt, Hideki treated the Fortinet as a warmup for this. Last year, Matsuyama shot a 64-68-68-65 on his way to the ZOZO trophy. The +1200 shot can repeat that effort and rates as the top choice to win on Saturday.

2022 ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP Second Pick

Sung-Jae Im played his first tournament of the season last week. Sung-Jae stepped onto the TPC Summerlin course at the Shriners Children’s Open and proceeded to shoot a fantastic 65-70-63- 67 on his way to a -19 and a seventh place finish.

Im didn’t tee off at the 2021 ZOZO Championship. That might given him an advantage in the sense that he can approach the course with a fresh viewpoint. In any case, Sung-Jae should build upon his Shriners Children’s Open finish. Give Im a big shot to win the 2022 ZOZO Championship.

2022 ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP Third Pick

Collin Morikawa ended the 2021-2022 PGA Tour Season finishing fifth at the BMW Championship, forty-fourth at the BMW Championship, and twenty-first at the Tour Championship.

Collin played well at last year’s ZOZO. The -5 was ten strokes off Matsuyama, but he finished a tied seventh, which means Hideki pulled away from the field. Morikawa can win and the odds are fair. So if you like him, go for it.

2022 ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP Underdog Pick

Sebastian Munoz’s -6 at the 2021 ZOZO Championship was 1 stroke better than Morikawa’s. Munoz didn’t make the cut at the Fortinet, the Sanderson Farms, or the Shriners Children’s Open, which explains the massive odds.

But Sebastian heads to a course he had a lot of success playing over last year. The odds make Munoz the top longshot play on the board.
