Boise State Broncos vs. UNLV Rebels

Mountain West title game from Las Vegas. Pretty interesting how this matchup was determined. Boise State, San Jose State, and UNLV all finished the regular season with identical 6-2 MW records. Since all three teams did not face each other this season and no team was ranked in the latest College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings, the three-way tie was broken by computer rankings from Anderson & Hester, Colley Matrix, Massey and Wolfe. Via the average computer rankings, UNLV finished at 44.50, while Boise State was at 55.75 and San José State at 58.50. Therefore, the Broncos and Rebels secured their spots in the MW Championship. UNLV had the higher overall average ranking and earned the right to host the title tilt. By advancing to the MW Championship Game, Boise’s Spencer Danielson becomes just the second interim head coach in college football history to take over midseason and lead his team to its league championship game. The only other coach to achieve that feat was Clay Helton with Southern Cal in 2015. Boise State’s offense rides tailback Ashton Jeanty, who was named the Mountain West’s Offensive Player of the Year. The national leader in total first downs recorded (84) and second in the nation in total missed tackles forced (83), despite missing two full games, he also is the only player in the nation with multiple 50+ yard rushing touchdowns and multiple 50+ yard receiving touchdowns, racing downfield for two of each.

The Rebels are bowl-eligible for the first time since playing in the Heart of Dallas Bowl after the 2013 season. UNLV has reached the nine-win mark for only the sixth time in history and first time since finishing 10-1 in 1984 when Randall Cunningham lined up at QB. UNLV is looking to win six home games for the first time since John Robinson’s 2000 squad went 6-0 at Sam Boyd Stadium and dating back to last season, UNLV has won nine of its last 12 games played at Allegiant Stadium. The Rebs have shattered program records for 40+point games for both consecutive outings (four) and in a season (six) while scoring at least 24 points in 10 straight games for the first time ever. UNLV leads the nation with 36 rushing touchdowns, which ranks second in school history behind only the 38 scored in 13 games during the 1974 season. Saturday’s game will mark the 12th meeting between Boise State and UNLV with the Broncos holding an 8-3 advantage in the all-time series.

2023 College Football Week 14 Pick: UNLV

SMU Mustangs vs. Tulane Green Wave

  • When: Saturday, December 2nd, 2023. 4:00pm EST
  • Where: Yulman Stadium, New Orleans, LA
  • College Football Odds: SMU (+4) // Tulane (-4)

American Athletic Conference title game from New Orleans. These teams didn’t play in the regular season. SMU got here with a win over Navy last week but also lost starting QB Preston Stone to a season-ending injury. The sophomore threw 3,197 yards and 28 touchdowns this season before getting hurt in the second quarter against Navy. Stone’s 275 passing yards in the first quarter against Navy were the most yards by any FBS player in any quarter this season and the most in the first quarter of an FBS game since 2019. Freshman Kevin Jennings will start for the Mustangs. Jennings has thrown for 224 yards and three touchdowns in six games this season. This will be the first start at SMU for Jennings. “You can’t replace the experience and the production with how Preston was playing, but that’s not what we’re asking Kevin to do,” coach Rhett Lashlee said. “We feel like we have a good team, and we feel like if Kevin will just show up and be Kevin, then he’s more than enough, and we’re excited about it.” The Mustangs are 10-0 this year when they have scored at least 30 points in a game.

Tulane got here with a hard-fought 29-16 win over a very good UTSA team last week. That made Tulane 23-3 in its last 26 games over the last two seasons. No Tulane team had previously won 20 or more games over a two-year period of time. The 23 victories since the start of the 2022 season ranks third nationally behind Georgia (27) and Michigan (25). Star QB Michael Pratt, who hasn’t personally lost since last year, has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 44 of his 45 career games, including 26 in a row, and has 31 career multiple TD pass games. He holds school records for career passing TDs and passing yardage. Pratt is atop the conference in pass efficiency (164.94). The Green Wave’s Makhi Hughes is the league’s leader in rushing yards (1,246) and rushing yards per game (103.83). As a team, Tulane paces the American Athletic Conference in rushing defense (86.0), fewest punts (37), field goals made (19) and defensive interceptions (15).

2023 College Football Week 14 Pick: Tulane

Appalachian State Mountaineers vs. Troy Trojans

Sun Belt title game from Troy, Ala. App State closed the regular season with a five-game winning streak to capture the Sun Belt’s East Division title and earn a Sun Belt Championship Game berth for the fourth time (in the game’s sixth year of existence). The Mountaineers won title games at home against Louisiana in 2018 (30-19 final) and 2019 (45-38 final) before falling at Louisiana in 2021 (24-16 final). After replacing injured starter Ryan Burger in the first half of the opener, QB Joey Aguilar threw a 32-yard TD pass on his first FBS play and has 33 TD passes (No. 1 in Sun Belt, No. 1 in Group of Five, No. 3 in FBS). The only FBS QBs entering this weekend’s title games with more TD passes this season are LSU’s Jayden Daniels (40) and Oregon’s Bo Nix (37). Since the third quarter of the Southern Miss game ended on Oct. 28, App State has outscored its opponents 174-80. The four full games were wins over four bowl-eligible teams. In the last four games, App State has allowed 18.3 points (or 15.3 per 60 minutes vs. the defense).

Troy is 21-2 since its visit to Boone on Sept. 17, 2022, when App State hosted ESPN’s College GameDay for the first time and then won 32-28 over the Trojans on a 53-yard Hail Mary. That was the last meeting between the schools. Troy has won the Sun Belt West in both of its seasons in the division and is hosting the SBC Championship Game for a second straight year. Troy has won 10 games during the regular season in consecutive years for the first time since 1999 and 2000, when the Trojans were FCS members. QB Gunnar Watson and RB Kimani Vidal are just the third Troy duo to pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a season in program history. Troy is 12-1 all-time when Kimani Vidal rushes for 100- plus yards and 25-3 when he rushes for 50-plus yards. The Trojans are 7-11 when Vidal rushes for fewer than 50 yards. Vidal holds all three of Troy’s rushing yard records — single-season, single-game and career. App State leads the overall series 8-3.
