2023 College Football Week 4 Odds, Overview & Picks

By Hank Blaine

The Deion Sanders train bandwagon continues to fill up at Colorado as the Buffs are 3-0 – already tripling their win total from last season. However, CU might be in line for a rude wake-up call on Saturday in a ranked showdown vs. Oregon. That is one of three picks for Week 4.

Florida State Seminoles vs. Clemson Tigers

  • When: Saturday, September 23rd, 2023. 12:00pm EST.
  • Where: Memorial Stadium, Clemson, SC
  • College Football Odds: FSU (-2) // Clemson (+2)

Two programs accounting for 13 ACC Championship Game appearances (and 11 ACC titles) over the last 14 years will square off. Shocking to see Clemson not only unranked but as a home underdog for the first time since 2016 against Lamar Jackson and Louisville. If Florida State does win here, go ahead and put the Seminoles in the ACC title game because it’s tough to see them more than once the rest of the way. Clemson can’t afford a loss because it already has one in league play. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has 99 regular-season ACC wins and can join former FSU legend Bobby Bowden as the only coaches to reach 100. Clemson enters Saturday having recorded at least one takeaway in 16 consecutive home games, the nation’s longest active streak. The Tigers have won seven straight in the series.

FSU enters on a nine-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the ACC and the 4th-longest active streak in the country. The Noles have scored at least 30 points in nine straight games, the longest active streak in the ACC, the 2nd-longest active streak in the nation and the program’s longest 30-point stretch since the 2013 national championship season. Florida State’s 142 points are its most through three games since 2012. The Seminoles have scored on their opening drive of a half in nine straight halves. In the six half-opening drives this season, Florida State has scored four touchdowns and two field goals and is averaging 5.7 points per drive. Florida State is a perfect 15-for-15 in Red Zone trips this season. QB Jordan Travis is a top Heisman candidate and the only player with 4 passing TDs and 1 rushing TD vs. a Power 5 team this season as he did it in the opener vs. LSU. Travis is the only player in FSU history with at least 50 passing TDs and 25 rushing TDs and one of four active players nationally with at least 6,600 passing yards and 1,800 rushing yards in career.

2023 College Football Week 4 Pick: Clemson

Colorado Buffaloes vs. Oregon Ducks

Colorado will be without one of the most electric players in the country in cornerback/receiver Travis Hunter as he suffered a lacerated liver on a late hit in last Saturday’s OT win over Colorado State. Hunter was taken to the hospital shortly after he absorbed a violent hit from Colorado State safety Henry Blackburn, who has received death threats. After being attended to by medical trainers, Hunter was able to return to the game, but only briefly before being pulled off the field and ultimately transported to the hospital for further evaluation. Hunter is expected to miss at least three weeks. Perhaps the most important number for the CU defense thus far has been takeaways. The Buffs have forced 10 turnovers this season — and six of those have come inside the CU 25-yard line, meaning each has ended a potential scoring threat.

Oregon’s offense has been firing on all cylinders as the Ducks have rolled to a 3-0 record. UO is No. 2 nationally with 58.0 points per game and is one of four teams to score 50-plus points multiple times. It has the nation’s fifth-ranked passing attack (363 yards per game) and the 17th-ranked rushing attack (216.3 yards per game). Colorado’s defense, meanwhile, is 122nd in the nation in yards per game (460.3) and 102nd in scoring defense (30.33). QB Bo Nix is the most experienced QB in the nation with 50 career starts, and he ranks 50th all-time with 11,736 passing yards. Oregon owns a 15-9 lead in the all-time series with Colorado, winning three in a row and nine of the last 10 after a 49-10 victory last season in Boulder.

2023 College Football Week 4 Pick: Oregon

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Non-conference game but absolutely huge regarding the College Football Playoff. Ohio State (956 wins) and Notre Dame (942) rank second and fourth, respectively, in all-time college football wins. This is the eighth meeting between the programs and the fifth consecutive – since 1996 – where both are in the Top 10 of the Associated Press poll. Last year, Ohio State beat Notre Dame 21-10 in the season opener in Columbus. Two stellar defenses will face off with Ohio State No. 3 nationally allowing 223.7 yards per game and Notre Dame at No. 4 allowing 234.2 yards per game. OSU’s defense has allowed just 20 points through the first three games. It’s the fewest points allowed at this point in 48 years, or since the 1975 team allowed just 16 points in Games 1-3. The Buckeyes are 16-1 all-time in true road games under Coach Ryan Day.

Saturday will mark the 37th time Notre Dame Stadium will host a contest with both teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 10. The Irish are 23-12-1 in those contests and 11-9 as the lower-ranked team. Dating back to the Gator Bowl victory over South Carolina to end the 2022 season, Notre Dame has scored at least 40 points in a program-best five consecutive games. ND has scored 184 points in the first four games of the season, which is the most for the program since 1914 and the fourth-most in program history. The Irish are 10-1 in their last 11 games and have scored 455 points in those contests. Only Southern Cal (474) has scored more. Irish quarterback Sam Hartman has thrown 90 touchdown passes since 2021 – the most of any Power 5 quarterback.

2023 College Football Week 4 Pick: Notre Dame
