2023 College Football Week 7 Sleeper Picks

By Hank Blaine

As we enter Week 7 of this college football season, there are five teams still unbeaten against the spread: Penn State, UNLV, Oregon, Rutgers and Oklahoma. Here are three sleeper picks this Saturday where we recommend the underdog ATS and an outright upset wouldn’t surprise.

Navy Midshipmen vs. Charlotte 49ers

American Athletic Conference matchup and first-ever meeting between the schools. Navy rallied for a 27-24 win over North Texas on Saturday as senior quarterback Tai Lavatai came off the bench to throw for 75 yards and a touchdown, while the defense recorded a school-record 8 sacks. Lavatai, who was playing in his 22nd career game and the first as a non-starter, took over for an injured Blake Horvath late in the second quarter. Fullback Alex Tecza had 137 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns on 17 carries. Horvath is going to miss awhile so Lavatai will start this one. Navy, Air Force and Penn State are the only 3 teams in the country that have not thrown an interception this year. The Mids are also 10th in the country in passing yards per completion, averaging 15.27. Navy is fourth nationally in rushing, averaging 248.2 yards per game. Tecza is fifth in the country in rushing yards per carry (7.64). Defensively, Navy ranks 3rd in the country in fumbles recovered with 7, 5th in turnover margin at +1.20 and 4th in turnovers lost with 3.

Charlotte won its opener against South Carolina State 24-3, but has since lost at Maryland (38-20), to Georgia State at home (41-25), at Florida (22-7) and at SMU (34-16). Very tough schedule . QB Jalon Jones, a transfer from both Bethune Cookman and Jackson State, leads the 49ers in both rushing and passing. Jones has rushed for 316 yards and 3 touchdowns on 62 carries, while completing 44 of his 72 pass attempts for 420 yards with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. This will be the 49ers’ first home game against an American Athletic Conference opponent. Running back Durell Robinson, who has 40 carries for 166 yards and a TD, will miss this game for undisclosed reasons even though Charlotte was off last week.

BYU Cougars vs. TCU Horned Frogs

  • When: Saturday, October 14th, 2023. 3:30pm EST
  • Where: Amon G. Carter Stadium, Fort Worth, TX
  • College Football Odds: BYU (+6) // TCU (-6)

BYU and TCU are renewing an old conference rivalry now in the Big 12. The two teams have played eight games as conference foes (4-4). The Cougars and Horned Frogs spent time in both the Western Athletic Conference and the Mountain West Conference together, matching up twice in the WAC (1996, 97) and six times in the MW (05-10). The Cougars are off their bye week and 1-1 in their first season in the new league. Quarterback Kedon Slovis is responsible for 15.6 points per game, ranking No. 27 nationally. He has run for three touchdowns and thrown for 10 touchdowns through five games. Thirteen different players have caught at least one pass in a game this season, with nine of them having multiple receptions. Seven different players have a receiving touchdown. The Cougars are 16 of 17 on scoring opportunities inside the red zone. BYU has scored touchdowns on 13 of 17 trips inside the red zone, ranking No. 17 with a 76.47 percent TD rate in the red zone.

TCU will be without starting QB Chandler Morris for a while. Morris got hurt in the third quarter last Saturday night when TCU (3-3) lost 27-14 at Iowa State. His left leg twisted awkwardly when being tackled. He left the game right after that and will likely miss multiple games. Morris has completed 131 of 191 passes (65.8%) for 1,513 yards with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions this season. Redshirt freshman Josh Hoover replaced Morris against the Cyclones, completing 11 of 19 passes for 119 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and will start going forward. Emani Bailey is second in the Big 12 and fourth nationally in rushing yards with 690. He has topped 100 yards in four games this season. TCU is 10-2 in Big 12 regular-season games under coach Sonny Dykes. The Frogs are 16-1 under Dykes when ahead or even in turnover margin.

2023 College Football Week 7 Pick: BYU

Kansas Jayhawks vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys

Big 12 matchup. Kansas is expected to be without preseason Big 12 Player of the Year and quarterback Jalon Daniels for another game due to injury. Daniels has missed three games this season, including Kansas’ season-opening win over Missouri State. His original back injury dates back to the Jayhawks’ preseason camp. Jason Bean has started the three games in place of Daniels this season. He has thrown for 503 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. The Jayhawks are 2-1 in his starts. They routed UCF 51-22 last weekend with Bean under center. Running back Devin Neal rushed for 154 yards on 12 carries with one touchdown, leading a KU rushing attack that totaled 399 yards. The Jayhawks would become bowl eligible for the second straight season with a win on Saturday.

Oklahoma State (3-2) came out of its bye last weekend and upset Kansas State 29-21. Ollie Gordon ran for 136 yards and a touchdown, and Alex Hale tied a school record with five made field goals. Alan Bowman passed for 235 yards and Cameron Epps returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown. Nickolas Martin recorded 17 tackles against the Wildcats, the most by a Cowboy since Jordan Sterns had 19 tackles against Oklahoma on December 3, 2016. Martin also added a sack, a career-best 2.5 tackles for loss and the first interception of his career. OSU’s latest College Football Hall of Fame inductee, Terry Miller, will be added to the Cowboy Football Ring of Honor inside Boone Pickens Stadium during halftime of Saturday’s game. Oklahoma State has won eight of its past 11 games against AP-ranked teams. OSU owns a 41-30-2 all-time series advantage vs. Kansas, including an 18-14-1 advantage in Stillwater. OSU has won 12 of the past 13 and 17 of the past 19 games in the series.
