2023 College Football Week 7 Odds, Overview & Picks

By Hank Blaine

Last Saturday was a tough one for Duke as it not only suffered its first loss of the season but also lost star QB Riley Leonard likely for multiple weeks to an ankle injury, severely hampering the Blue Devils’ chances of reaching the ACC title game. Here are three Week 6 games we like, all on Saturday.

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Purdue Boilermakers

Could it be a trap game for the Buckeyes? They could be looking ahead to next Saturday’s home game vs. No. 6 Penn State. OSU star TreVeyon Henderson is expected to be back in the lineup for the Buckeyes’ game at Purdue. However, another key starter, receiver Emeka Egbuka, remains questionable for Saturday’s game. Henderson, a third-year running back and NFL prospect, was protectively held out of last week’s win over Maryland, although he likely could have played. Henderson has 295 rushing yards in four games, an average of 6.7 per carry, and two touchdowns. Egbuka, a 1,000-yard receiver last year, has 22 catches for 303 yards and three touchdowns. Coach Ryan Day’s teams are 33-0 vs. unranked opponents, with his program’s six losses to teams ranked Nos. 3, 1, 12, 5, 3 and 1, respectively. Since the 2000 season, Ohio State is just 3-5 at Purdue, including a 49-20 loss in its last visit in 2018 that was the only blemish on a 13-1 season that included a Big Ten championship game win over Northwestern and a Rose Bowl win over Washington.

It will be a blackout at Purdue with all fans asked to wear black. The Boilermakers are one of only two teams (Maryland) in the Big Ten to average at least 240 passing yards per game and at least 140 yards rushing yards per game. Purdue leads the Big Ten in first downs (140), including 76 passing first downs which also tops the conference. The Boilermakers are outscoring teams 49-17 in the third quarter this season. Running the Air Raid offense, quarterback Hudson Card makes a Big Ten-best 22.7 completions per game. On the flip side, 13 of Purdue’s 19 offensive touchdowns have been on the ground. The Boilermakers have defeated Ohio State four times in history when the Buckeyes were ranked in the Top 5 (1945, 1960, 1984, 2018). Purdue has faced Top 5 teams five times over the past 5 seasons, posting a 3-2 record against those opponents during that stretch.

2023 College Football Week 7 Pick: Purdue

Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Alabama and Arkansas will meet for the 34th time on Saturday. The Crimson Tide lead the all-time series, 26-7, and have won 16 straight over the Razorbacks. Nick Saban is 19-2 for his career against Arkansas and a perfect 16-0 while at the Capstone. Bama star defensive back Malachi Moore, who left last weekend’s win over Texas A&M with a high ankle sprain, will be a game-time decision against Arkansas. Alabama coach Nick Saban said Wednesday that Moore, a Bronko Nagurski watch list pick who has four tackles for loss and an interception this season, and starting punter James Burnip’s availability will depend on “the progress they make” this week. Burnip missed the second half against Texas A&M with a lower-body injury. Bama has won 16 straight against unranked opponents and is 120-4 (.968) against unranked opponents under Saban. He is 59-7 at home in SEC games.

Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said he’s unsure whether four defensive starters will be available to play at Alabama. Linebacker Chris Paul, defensive lineman Cam Ball and defensive backs Al Walcott and Jaylon Braxton left last weekend’s loss at Ole Miss with injuries. Hogs QB KJ Jefferson has completed 110-of-1164 passes (67.1%) for 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns while also rushing for 136 yards and a touchdown through six games this season. Jefferson, who has thrown for at least one touchdown in each of his last 17 games under center, ranks first on Arkansas’ career touchdown responsibility list with 80 (60 passing touchdowns, 20 rushing touchdowns). Through six games, the Razorbacks have recorded a league-leading 11 takeaways, including seven interceptions.

2023 College Football Week 7 Pick: Alabama

UCLA Bruins vs. Oregon State Beavers

Important Pac-12 game and last meeting between these schools for a long while with UCLA headed to the Big Ten next year. Saturday’s battle marks the first between the programs in Corvallis, Ore. Since a 41-0 Bruin win in 2015. The most recent gridiron meeting between the schools ended in a 48-31 Beaver victory at the Rose Bowl during the 2019 campaign. The Bruins are looking for their first road win against a ranked opponent since beating No. 19 WSU, 67-63, in 2019. UCLA leads the series, which dates back to a 1930 meeting in Los Angeles, by a 43-17-4 count. The Bruins’ 12.2 points allowed ranks eighth nationally. The Bruins have held each opponent to fewer than 20 points. Bruin opponents are averaging just 3.7 yards per play in 2023. A UCLA defense most recently held opponents under 4.0 yards per play for a full season in 1969 (3.5). The Bruin defense has allowed five touchdowns (four passing and one rushing), which is the fewest in the Pac-12.

The Beavers and Bruins are meeting for the first time with both teams ranked since 2001 when OSU was 19th and UCLA 12th. The Bruins won that game, 38-7. Oregon State has won 14 of its past 15 at home. The Beavers have 22 red zone conversions in 22 attempts this season. OSU is one of just five teams nationally with a 100-percent success rate. Oregon State trounced Cal 52-40 last time out. OSU has now won 10 straight games when scoring 40 or more. The Beavers are 17-1 over their last 18 when doing so dating back to 2016. Oregon State snapped a 20-game losing streak when an opponent scores 40 or more points. Under Coach Jonathan Smith, Oregon State is 25-6 when leading at halftime. The Beavers are also 24-3 when taking a lead into the fourth quarter.

2023 College Football Week 7 Pick: Oregon State
