2022 Mexico Open at Vidanta Recap

Although Jon Rahm won the 2022 Mexico Open, by no means was grabbing the victory easy. Rahm beat Tony Finau, Kurt Kitayama, and Brandon Wu by a single stroke, -17 to -16.

Davis Riley was a lone fifth place. Four players tied for sixth at 14: Cameron Champ, David Lipsky, Alex Smalley, and Aaron Wise. Patrick Rodgers was a lone tenth at -13.

2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta Top Pick

We hate backing chalk, but the favorite in this towers over the rest of the field. Jon Rahm followed up the Masters victory with a decent fifteenth place finish at the RBC Heritage.

Rahm didn’t participate at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. We must assume he’s circled this tournament when figuring out his 2023 calendar. Jon already has four wins on the season.

If he’s showing up, it means he wants to win. The only player who should be close to Rahm on Sunday is Tony Finau.

2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta Second Pick

Tony Finau is playing well enough for a look to place ahead of Rahm. Tony hasn’t hit the ball as well as he did earlier in the season, but some decent shots this week and he should be right there with favorite in the final pairing on Sunday.

Finau won the Cadence Bank Houston Open. So he’s had success this season. The problem is that Rahm will be ultra-focused and beat him by a stroke in this last year. But if you think Tony turns the tables, go for it. The +800 odds on the player most likely to beat the chalk are fair.

2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta Third Pick

Patrick Rodgers finished just 4 strokes off Rahm at last year’s Mexico Open. Make no mistake, Rodgers is not playing great golf.

He missed the cut in three straight before a tied thirty-sixth at the Valspar Championship. Patrick then missed the cut at the Corales Puntacana Championship.

But a fifth place Valero Texas Open finish is a sign he’s striking the ball well. Also, Rodgers followed up the fifth place finish at the Valero with a nineteenth at the RBC Heritage. If Finau and Rahm stumble, Rodgers is one of those who can take advantage.

2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta Underdog Pick

Like Rodgers, Brandon Wu isn’t striking the ball well. However, there have been flashes this season where Wu looked as if he might finish in the top ten.

At the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am, Wu almost won. Brandon shot a 69-66-71-66 to finish at – 15 and in a tie for second. If that Brandon Wu shows up, he’ll easily out play his odds.

Also, let’s not forget Wu finished tied with Finau at -16 in this last year. Give Brandon Wu a better chance to win the Mexico Open at Vidanta than the 60-to-1 odds imply.
