2023 NFL Coach of the Year Favorites

Dan Campbell

Many fans and experts are high on the Lions this coming season, especially with Detroit winning eight of its last 10 games in 2022. Much of the credit goes out to motivational master Dan Campbell, who orchestrated a comeback that earned the Lions their first winning season since 2017. Campbell and the Lions almost made it to the playoffs last season as well, and the former NFL tight end’s exceptional job of turning a one-laughingstock Detroit franchise around is why he’s the odds-on favorite to win the 2023 NFL Coach of the Year Award.

Sean Payton

The biggest coaching hire of the offseason came from Mile High, as the Broncos made the splashy move of hiring former Super Bowl-winning head coach Sean Payton. Denver had a miserable 2022 campaign in Russell Wilson’s debut to forget, and it’s Payton’s job to resurrect Wilson from the pits of mediocrity. Pundits believe Payton, who won COTY honors in 200t6 with the Saints, is the right man for the task and has a wealth of winning experience from his heydays in The Big Easy. In turn, Payton is a rightful co-favorite to win his second Coach of the Year Award, even after taking a two-year hiatus from the sidelines.

2023 NFL Coach of the Year Dark Horses

Jonathan Gannon

Over three of the last five seasons, a first-year head coach was named Coach of the Year. Jonathan Gannon is in that position right now, as he’s now at the helm of a Cardinals team in total dysfunction. Gannon served as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator and turned Philly’s D into one of the league’s best at that. Gannon has the tall order of turning a porous Arizona defense around while also helping Kyler Murray have a bounce-back campaign. Yet if all the pieces fall right into place, Gannon is one compelling sleeper pick to consider winning the award as the next debuting coaching hire to receive the accolade.

Ron Rivera

In 2013 and 2015, Ron Rivera won the Coach of the Year Award for his exemplary work with Cam Newton and a revitalized Panthers organization. Fast forward to 2020 and he’s now in command of the rebranded Commanders. Washington has flirted with relative success in Rivera’s tenure with subpar quarterback play in those three seasons. Can “Riverboat Ron” join a rare class of three-time COTY winners with either of his young QB projects Sam Howell or Jake Fromm, or even possibly turn Jacoby Brissett into an All-Pro play-caller? It’s Rivera’s experience that makes him another compelling sleeper candidate to take home some hardware in 2023.

2023 NFL Coach of the Year Dark Huge Reach

Andy Reid

Let’s not be mistaken: the Chiefs are the best team in the NFL, hands down, and Andy Reid is the brightest football mastermind orchestrating a Patrick Mahomes-led offense to perfection. On the other hand, the NFL Coach of the Year Award often rewards coaches for having done the best job at turning a particular franchise around. Kansas City has been a perennial Super Bowl contender and has won a pair of Lombardi Trophies at that. As such, unless KC goes undefeated in the 2023 regular season, Reid is seen as nothing more than a longshot to win his second COTY award and first since 2002.
