2023 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Odds

By Jeff Stinger

Everyone loves a good comeback story, and the NFL is never short on those inspirational stories on the gridiron. Over the past five seasons, a quarterback has won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award. Will that still be the case in 2023, especially with a non-QB consensus favorite currently leading the pack?

Nitrobetting is here to take your bets into the end zone this 2023 NFL season. This time, let’s break down several players that are seen as favorites, sleepers, and longshots to win the 2023 NFL Comeback Player of the Year and their corresponding odds of winning the coveted award.

2023 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Favorites

Damar Hamlin

The entire NFL came to an abrupt halt and skipped a heartbeat when Bills safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest mid-game last season. Hamlin has since recovered and the NFL fanbase showed nothing but love and prayers for a safe recovery that were well answered. Hamlin was cleared to return earlier this April and is expected to return to his spot in Buffalo’s stingy secondary, and a full season of action for him will likely win him the Comeback Player of the Year Award as the consensus favorite odds-wise, and that’s even likely regardless of how well he performs upon his return.

Russell Wilson

What a disastrous debut in Denver former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson had in 2022. Wilson had his worst outing as a pro since his rookie year and slowly turned into a bigger meme in the NFL fanbase’s eyes. However, much of the Broncos’ regression can be attributed to poor coaching, and that’s where the blockbuster hiring of former Saints head coach Sean Payton comes into the equation. Payton and Wilson are decorated football figures who appear to fit perfectly, and it’s this new partnership that makes Russ an intriguing borderline favorite to win Comeback Player of the Year honors.

2023 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Dark Horses

Jonathan Taylor

After having a phenomenal 2021 season as the league’s top rusher and rushing scorer, stud Colts running back Jonathan Taylor fell off quite the cliff in his third year. Taylor played just 11 games due to an ankle injury and finished with 861 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground, which is a far cry from his 1,800-yard, 18-TD campaign the prior season. Nonetheless, JT is too good of a talent to have another total letdown, which also makes him a compelling sleeper pick to be named Comeback Player of the Year if he manages to put up numbers closer to his breakout performance in 2021.

Jimmy Garoppolo

Speaking of injuries veteran play-caller Jimmy Garoppolo can’t just catch a break despite leading the 49ers to multiple NFC title games and a pair of Super Bowl appearances. Jimmy G suffered a foot injury that put him back on the shelf and paved the way for the Niners’ underdog story for Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy. Now, Garoppolo is at the helm of a Raiders offense with solid weapons in Davante Adams and Josh Jacobs. As long as he fully recovers from his foot surgery in time for the season opener and leads Vegas back to the playoffs, Garoppolo will be in the mix for the Comeback Player of the Year Award and he even has decent sleeper odds of doing just that.

2023 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Huge Reach

Clyde Edwards-Helaire

It now feels like forever since we saw former LSU standout running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire made everyone take notice of his skills as a rookie in 2020. Each of the last two seasons since his debut has been a letdown, though, as he slid further down the Chiefs’ RB depth chart. At 24 years of age and less than 400 career carries in the NFL to date, Edwards-Helaire still has a lot left in the tank. However, if Kansas City’s high-powered offense isn’t finding any room for him in the team’s backfield, CEH will remain a long shot to win the Comeback Player of the Year Award. It will take a trade to a new team plus a significant increase in production for him to improve these odds.
