A Closer Look at 2023 NFL Week 1

Kansas City puts their retooled defensive line to the test versus Jared Goff and the Lions

On the first day of training camp, Patrick Mahomes looked like he hadn’t had an offseason. Mahomes was as sharp as ever. But the KC offense line could struggle this season. So don’t jump on the Chiefs’ Super Bowl bandwagon just yet.

In NFL Week 1, Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson could get to Patrick a couple of times. But the real reason to believe Detroit can pull off the upset is because of KC’s defensive line.

Chris Jones has yet to report, which means sixth round draft pick Keondre Coburn and second year player George Karlaftis will rush Jared Goff from the edges.

The Lions will boast the league’s most dynamic offense. So a high-scoring affair, where Detroit comes out on top, is a real possibility.

It’s a battle of young quarterbacks when the Panthers take on the Falcons

About ten minutes after the Carolina Panthers drafted Bryce Young, the organization made him their starter. In NFL Week 1, Young goes against a player he’s familiar with on the other side, Desmond Ridder.

While at Cincinnati, Atlanta’s starting QB faced Young and Bama at the 2022 College Football Playoff. Bryce’s and Desmond’s employers have high hopes for their stars in the making.

This is a game that could go either way. Ridder and Young should play well, but the key will be an injury to a player that lines up on the line, either on offense or defense. Wait until the week of before making your decision on which squad covers the spread.

New England hopes improvements on offense and defense can help them versus Philly

Belichick teams don’t stay down for long, which is why New England has a chance to shock Philadelphia in NFL Week 1. This happens on the Patriots’ field, which will help New England’s cause.

More importantly, Bill hired Bill 2, that’s Bill O’Brien, to run the offense. O’Brien and Mac Jones, New England’s starting signal-caller, know each other well.

Over on the defensive side, the Patriots and their fans are raving about corner Christian Gonzalez. The former Oregon Ducks player could take Devonta Smith out of the game, which means Belichick can call plays designed to disrupt Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown.

Dolphins versus Chargers puts the winning team on the playoff path

It’s only NFL Week 1, right? So a loss won’t matter? We beg to differ. The Bolts and the Fins play in a massive, huge, Sunday afternoon game at SoFi in Los Angeles that could determine which team makes the playoffs.

Both squads throw down in deep divisions. Miami is in the AFC East that includes Buffalo, New England, and the Aaron Rodger led New York Jets.

The Chargers play in the AFC West, where the Raiders, the Chiefs, and the Sean Payton coached Denver Broncos reside.

Fans may not believe this game is as important as we do. We can be assured, though, that Justin Herbert and Tua Tagovailoa do. The team that wins gets a leg up over the other for a wildcard berth.

Because Miami’s and LAC’s divisions are so deep, playing for a wildcard this season might be the best bet.

The Jets look to prove they’re Super Bowl contenders versus the Bills on Monday night

Buffalo enters the Meadowlands a slight favorite against Aaron Rodgers and the Jets. What’s amazing is that, at least on paper, the Jets are the much better team.

Sure, it’s the Jets and Rodgers is older than Josh Allen, but Aaron is a hall of famer who gets to throw to one of the up and coming receivers in NFL, Garrett Wilson.

Wilson is on the Justin Jefferson level, which, let’s be clear, is probably one of the reasons Rodgers decides to take his gear to New York. The game will be epic, but it’s hard seeing Rodgers and Wilson losing this one.
