The Florida Panthers were scheduled to host the 2021 NHL All-Star Game but that was canceled due to the COVID pandemic. So the Panthers instead will host this Saturday’s All-Star Game, which per usual will be a division-type round-robin event. Check back for NHL odds.

Team Coaches

The coaches for the teams are as follows: Rod Brind’Amour of the Carolina Hurricanes (Metropolitan), Jim Montgomery of the Boston Bruins (Atlantic), Peter DeBoer of the Dallas Stars (Central) and Bruce Cassidy of the Vegas Golden Knights (Pacific). Those teams had the highest points percentage (points earned divided by total possible points) in their respective divisions at the official halfway point of the regular season in mid-January.

Brind’Amour will be coaching his second All-Star Game after coaching the Metropolitan Division last season. Montgomery will be coaching his first All-Star Game and is in his first season with Boston. The Bruins fired Cassidy after last season but he landed on his feet in Las Vegas. He will coach in the All-Star Game for the second time, leading the Atlantic Division in 2020 with the Bruins. DeBoer will be making his third All-Star Game appearance as a coach, including last season when he was with the Golden Knights. He also coached the Pacific Division in 2017, when he was with the San Jose Sharks.

DeBoer said the game being in Florida, where he got his coaching start in the NHL with the Panthers in 2008-09, will make it special. “For me it’s a little full circle. It’s where I started. It’s hard to believe,” DeBoer said. “It feels like it was 50 years ago, not 15, but it will be nice to go back. It’s always nice to return there and see some of the people that I’ve had relationships with since my first coaching job in the league. It’s a little nostalgic because it is full circle and you never know when you’re going to get a chance to do this again.”

Boston, Carolina and Dallas still lead their divisions but Vegas has fallen off a bit due to injury and is second in the Pacific to Seattle.

2023 NHL All-Star Game Format

The format remains the same: Three-game tournament played at 3-on-3 format for two 10-minute periods. The Pacific Division will play the Central Division in the first All-Star Game semifinal, followed by the Atlantic taking on the Metropolitan Division.

Each of the four teams will include nine skaters and two goalies. If a game is tied after the 20 minutes are up, it heads straight to a three-round (or more) shootout to crown a winner.

Forward Matthew Tkachuk will represent the hometown Panthers in the Atlantic Division. It will be the second All-Star Game for Tkachuk, who played in 2020 as a member of the Calgary Flames. His brother, Brady Tkachuk, will represent the Ottawa Senators, and the two will be NHL All-Star Game teammates for the first time. All 32 teams will have at least one representative at All-Star Weekend.

The jerseys for the teams are modeled on ones from the mid-1990s, giving a “Reverse Retro” makeover from adidas. They’re accented with electric blues and pinks “inspired by the vibrant sunsets and glowing neon of South Beach,” but not typically found on NHL uniforms. This is the first time since 2009 that the All-Star teams will be identified as East and West on the crests of the jerseys.

One major star will miss the game: Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He won the Rocket Richard Trophy in the 2021-22 season as the league’s leading goalscorer with a career-high 60. Matthews recently suffered a knee injury and will be sidelined a few weeks. Florida’s Aleksandar Barkov replaced him on the Atlantic Division squad.

2023 NHL All-Star Game Betting Prediction

The betting favorite for the Calder Trophy for NHL Rookie of the Year, Seattle center Matty Beniers, also is out injured. Chandler Stephenson of the Golden Knights will make his first All-Star appearance in his place. He joins teammate and goaltender Logan Thompson on the Pacific squad. Vancouver’s Bo Horvat was named to the Pacific team but was recently traded to the Islanders. No word yet on what the NHL may do there.

Last year in Las Vegas, the Metropolitan Division beat the Central Division 5-3 in the final. Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux had two goals in the final and one in the semifinal and was named All-Star MVP. Giroux will not repeat the honors this year as he’s with the Ottawa Senators and was not chosen an All-Star despite a good season.
